New to the forums and Error P0410
Hi all,
In late 2004, I bought my very first Volvo ('97 850 wagon)after driving a friend's 760 with over 200k miles on it. It still drove amazingly well over long distances, and I was convinced! I had the timing belt and tires replaced, and it treated me quite well for the first year. After having the front struts and strut mounts replaced at painful cost to my bank account, I decided to take a more active role in the care of my car -- changing hoses, spark plugs, etc myself. Last week my Check Engine light came on, and I had AutoZone pull the ODB-II code. It came up with:
P0410 A malfunction exists in the secondary air injection system.
Is there any chance that this could be something other than the air pump? The valve looks okay, but I'm not quite brave enough to take out my battery and all that hullaballoo. I called the local mechanic (central mass, us)and was quoted $550 for parts and $120 for labor. Does that sound about right? I've never had parts outstrip labor so much. I also can't really afford another costly repair right now, so I'm wondering if it could be something different, and if I'm in danger of damaging my car by continuing to drive.
Thanks for any help/advice,
Rachel

See what TECH has to say, but first thing you might want to do is check your vacuum lines. My feeling is that it could be your Mass Air Flow Sensor, which is an easy job to do yourself. But wait and see what somebody who really knows says.
Sorry Jim but the massflow would not cause the code.
Did you remove the Valve and test it?
I would have to guess it is the Air pump. They are known to fill up with water and seize up. That also burns the relay up as well.
In the general section there is a post with links to sites. Check in the sites for the parts. They are pretty expensive. But not that hard to replace. Here is a link maybe it is just down for now. But not sure.
If it works it will take you to a pump for a S70. Then you can back track for your car.

Thanks, tech. You're always so helpful!
What would I do to test the valve? And.. is this something that could hurt the car if I drive on it for a few more days? It's my only car, but I also generally only drive about 10miles a day during the week.
