Update:












It's still clunking though. I think it's the steering rack. My dad jacked it up, and if you tap the outer tie rod end, the steering rack clunks inside the rack (inner and outer tie rods brand new, so it's not them clunking). That made an audible clunk with just his hand, imagine that under torque driving and what no.

 

Man that is a good looking ride. I just cleaned up the S70, full detail including touch up paint. It looks good as well. Might take some picst tomorrow.

Were those seats oem?

 

Thanks. I appreciate that. Seats are OEM, but not for the 850, seats are from a '98 S70 T5-SE that my friend wrecked.

I see from the interior pic that your headliner is black - how do you like it? I've been thinking about replacing mine and thought I'd go with black at first (I figure it'll be hard to match the tan factory color), but then I was wondering if it would give the feeling of being in a smaller space.

 

I like it fine. To be honest, I don't really notice it anymore. I don't know, I just hate Volvo Tan with a passion, and since I had to take my headliner out, I figured I'd replace it right away. I'll dye everything else black when I get a chance.

Thanks Tech. Hopefully after I do the steering rack it will be good for a very long time. I still need to do the evaporator, but I don't know if I want to attempt that this year anymore, or wait until after this summer to try that. I kind of just want to enjoy it for a while before I do anymore large projects on it.

 

Gilber: that looks very nice. For everybody else -- go find me a 17-year old daily driver that looks this classy... and has the ***** to burn those rice puddings...

Thanks for the kind words Henry. Still trying to work out a couple issues; such as my clunk (which I think I fixed), and this acceleration "wall" I'm hitting in high RPMs.

 

That car has come a long way. Are you glad you went with the sedan over the wagon now? Look'in good.

little height comparison

 

Engine compartment/PCV can lines look good. Hopefully that's helping with gunk. I also really like tethys (I hate Laepetus I have).

On the bike rack -- I have a Thule rack for 4 bikes on the roof. However, I found the ones with the fork bolt (like yours) annoying to use. Mine is with a jaw for the down-tube and regular straps for the wheels. No wheels to take off.

I like it a lot, a lot better than the hitch-mounted, plus more room. Since Volvo suck with rooftop cargo boxes, I switched everything around -- bikes on top, cargo on the hitch.

Sweet pics. You painted your bumpers and side moldings VS dye???

How hard is it to get the side moldings off? I may take mine off to dye them with Forever Black.

 

Yeah. I had originally used Forever Black from IPD, I liked it at first, but I don't like it anymore. They were already faded and uneven about a year later, you can see it on the rear bumper in a couple pics further up on this page. I used bumper paint stuff from Autozone. Worked really nice and I would recommend it. You also won't have to worry about it fading.

Side molding takes about five minutes to take off. Open the doors and you'll see a little "cap" towards the edge of the door level with the molding, pop that out, and one torx screw that secures the molding to the door, then the molding slides towards the back of the car and pops out.

 

Thanks for the tip. I'm trying to polish this wagon and it would be faster if the moldings were removed.

My forever black looks real good on my yellow sedan. I took my time and really cleaned the bumpers and moldings up real good before I did them and they look great after 2 years. I even did the door handles and the black/grey areas of the side mirrors. I may take the handles off to do the handles on the wagon. I have the roof rails off right now. Want to install V70 rails but may just refinish these until I get some. Looks like you used bed liner paint.

 

Yeah, I don't know if it's that I didn't clean them enough, or if they were so dried out from never being treated, that the plastic just soaked up the dye. Either way, the paint is good stuff, and won't have to worry about it fading. And yeah, for how easy it is to remove the trim, I would definitely take them off when you're polishing/waxing.

And yes, it's truck bed liner. The stuff is extremely flexible, which is why I used it.
