When I test drove the car, the gas gauge worked. When I picked it up it didn't. I changed the sending unit, but that did not
do it. A guy at a used parts place today told me to check/change the fuel pump. even though it works, he said the float may
be broken, and that's why the gauge does not work. Any thoughts, anyone?

It could be:

1. Float: Highly unlikely but it may be sticking. Try using a bottle of fuel system cleaner as a cheap alternative.
2. Gauge itself: Tap the top of the cluster several times to see if it frees it up.
3. Electrical connection: Try locating a loose wire.
