Default No Power in Winter till warmed up. Collapsed Intercooler Hose!

Hey guys, Happy New Year!

I remember long ago a thread on this situation happening to lots of people, happended to me last night,

When its extremelty cold, sometimes even just a little frigid like -15 degrees Celcius; my 850 turbo has no power, no matter how hard I press the accelerator its as if the car went into a limp home mode, no rpms in any gear, but it won't do anything till it warms right up and it can take forever. Yesterday I figured out what causes it. My intercooler hose rubber hose* from the throttle I think it was. Well the one that goes directly to the intercooler at the front of the engine at an angle collapses so bad that the car idles at about 300rpm! and still keeps running. Yet has no power, no nothing it wouldnt even start yesterday because it wouldnt catch. No enough air to the engine.

Tech I remember you asking this question in that thread whether that sympton happens, collapsed hose, it does! Why? How do I fix it? is it a weak link hose and I should upgrade to silicone? because the hose gets so collapsed it is rediculous.

Thanks in advance, I had to leave my car and take a friends last night!

Going to get it now.

All the best in the New Year guys!

Kelsey

If the hose is collapsing then the hose is bad and needs to be replaced.

Kelsey,

Can you post photos of the collapsed hose?

Okay, I thought so, but why would so much vacuum happen to suck that hose in like minus 40 celcius?

Hm, well thanks Tech appreciate it, Silicone?

And I will post a picture if I can or draw it as i remember it very clearly

Thanks guys!

Anyone know where to buy individual silcone hoses not sets?

Yes Silicone.
Not sure why it does it when that cold. I would assume it would be good in the cold and fail when warm.

I do not think you can buy only certain ones. I have been looking for some for about a year.

Kelsodatrini, I'm experiencing the same thing right now (hence why I'm reading your thread). I don't think the answer is as simple as "your hose is bad". While driving, it sounds like the turbo isn't spooling up at all. If the turbo isn't spooling up, the engine is drawing more air than what the intricate piping and intercooling system can allow to flow due to restriction, and therefore, the tubing collapses. It may be that a valve or something isn't operating correctly at the lower temps. My S70 T5 was working fine this morning as I pulled out of the heated garage, but once it sat at work for 8 hours, it was having problems in the 9deg F weather. I'm going to let it warm up in my garage and see what changes.

This guy's having the same problem, and he already has silicon tubing.

car ran fine after sitting in the warm garage for an hour. I don't think the tubing is the problem. It's something else. Not sure if it's a valve, or something else.

Really, hmm weird, This happended last year to me while we were in El nina here and I hoped with El nino and warmer winter it wolnd't happen, well yeah it did, does..

Gr I hoped it was as simple as the hose, but in that frigid weather the rubber hose would be quite cold for it to collapses like that I would think, it appeared it was being sucked by and extremely strong vacuum, but I don't know next day the hose expanded and was perfectly fine, but this is odd, other cars not volvo seem to just have thick oil or low battery issues not this. Why our cars..?

I'll keep looking into it, but its forsure being robbed of power as when the syptom is happening it won't rev boyond 1200 rpms and it just sounds rough..

Thanks for the feedback keep me posted.

kelsodatrini,
my friend has a 1994 volvo 850 turbo, and the top intercooler hose also collapsed, preventing start up and flooding his spark plugs. we put in two pieces of plastic piping inside the top rubber hose to prevent collapse until he gets the proper top intercooler hose. still the car would not start.
so i read somewhere on here that u remove the bottom hose from intercooler.....it was full of ice.....then we looked for drain hole in intercooler...it was blocked...so we widened it with a small drill and water drained out....about a liter of water...so we used a hairdryer to melt the rest of the ice.
now it starts fine....except he says it sounds different.

I had the same problem and haven't replaced the hose in the following two winters. I also haven't had the problem with the hose collapsing or the vehicle being un-driveable. If you slowly try to accelerate the engine and you see the hose collapse it's due to a restriction. Frozen intercooler or even the turbo not spinning freely are the two most likely. My intercooler was a little oily but had no condensation or ice so I figured it was my turbo. Ended up that first winter using a second vehicle on really cold days. After running some engine cleaner, like seafoam through it that second year I haven't had a problem with it the last two winters. Started up fine and handles freeway speeds without problem no matter how cold.
