Question OBDII scan

I have a 95 850 GLT NA. I have used the OBDI successfully many times. I know about the OBDII port under the coin holder. I tried to scan from this port with the setup I have with my PC and nothing. I have used this unit with my 2001 Malibu and 2003 Mercedes successfully.

Thank you

Have you tried going to autozone or advanced and use their scanner?

if theirs doesnt work then your wiring to the ODBII port may have some issues.

I'm not able to pull codes from my 95 OBD2 port with my reader either. I can read sensor data and reset the light though.

Some codes reset themselves. If an item is intermittant it may not be in error when you scan. I'm seeing this with an O2 sensor error.

I think I need to do as suggested and go to Autozone and see if they have a reader that will connect. My setup doesn't even find the ECU and I know the setup works on other vehicles because I have used it successfully on my 2001 Malibu and 2003 Mercedes.

OBDII ports use different protocols. Your PC connection may not be able to read the Volvo protocol. Best to just try another scanner.

As suggested I went to Advance Auto and asked them to do a scan. Of course they told me since my car was a 95 it wasn't OBDII compliant. Then I asked them "Then why do I have a OBDII port?" Anyway they did a scan and the unit they were using was able to do a scan.

Now I have to figure out why my PC scanner will work on Chev and Mercedes but not Volvo.

Thanks for all the responses.

Go to ScanGauge.com and read up a little on protocols. It may help you understand. Most hand held scanners till auto detect the system.

Did as you instructed rspi. Found out that my Volvo is ISO 9141. Then I checked pin location on OBDII port to confirm. My software(ODBWiz) shows ISO 9141-2. From what I could research the 9141 needs a slower baud rate to connect. So from what I could determine from reading about K-line and all I should avoid using auto detect since required time lapses to connect are insufficient and result will be 'fail to connect'. Tommorrow I will give it a shot and see what happens.

OK, finally successful with scanner on my Volvo. After much Google research I found out that on pre 96 Volvo, of which mine is, baud time is much slower than newer. When using auto detect ECU could not respond before program would declare "No connection". So instead of using auto detect I qued the program to ISO 9141-2, hit connect and everything was OK. Now I have to understand all the features of the program.

Thanks for all the responses
