I changed the oil in my 97 850R
I cant get the "service" light to turn off
I tried the key in stage 1 and 2
and holding the reset button on the trip computer for 30 seconds and couldn't get it to work

any thoughts?

I don't think the reset button has anything to do with reseting the service light. I think you need a scan tool to clear that code from what I remember reading. I was able to clear mine using the dignostic box under the hood but I don't think you have one if its a '97.

 

I read a post where two 850 owners were saying that you can reset the service light with the process of placing the key in position 1 or 2 and holding the reset button. One of them said they got it to work.
