Default Oil pool on cylinder head

Hey Guys......

Im getting pooling (see pic with circle) but there seems to be no leakage around the area, thought it might be the camshaft seal since its around the bolt in the pic, but the timing belt cover seems clean in and out. any ideas?

Second ?

could someone tell me the diffs of the trany selections of the 850?

Econo
Sport
Winter
Tracs

I drive 80% city as a courier..what would be my best selection.

Thanks in advance

Vent system might be clogged pushing the oil out the cap.

I thought of that, but there is no oil pooing in any other bolt seat (even the ones just below the oil cap, just the farthest one away (the one I circled) strange eh.

Just a second thought, I have the haynes manual, where or what would I look for if the Vent system is clogged....what could I do to check to see if it is the problem.

Turbo or Non?
If non there is a screen in the induction hose just before the motor. Check that screen and all the hoses for clogs.

Turbo, a mech friend said it might be the bolt it self, if the bolt is loose or worn, could oil under pressure come up thru the bolt hole?

I also noticed in the front cover of the Haynes manual the pic shows a cover of some sort over top of the manifold. This is missing on my 850. Is this important, should I go find one (what is it know as)?

Just a method of testing the condition of vent system:

When the engine is warm to running temperature, Remove the engine oil dipstic with the car idling and look for smoky blow from there. If there is no white smoky blow-by then there is nothing wrong with it but if you see some of this blow, then you vent system needs replacement/cleanaing.

Usually those bolts don't leak. But I guess it is possible.

Yes check it at the dipstick like said above.

Tech, I will check out the dipstick method, now if the vent system is at fualt, I checked my haynes manual for maintence for cleaning of the vent systme and found nothing. Is this sysetem called something else, or could you give me a few quick tips to locating and what parts need to be replaced or cleaned.

Thanks again

Try looking for flame trap system or oil trap.

Its also Called PCV system by volvo. But in short, all you need is a kit from the link above which have all the hoses and oil catch can (vent box) and a new intake manifold gasket because this vent box sits right under the manifold and you will have to take the manifold off to replace those parts. This intake manifold gasket is part fo the kit sometimes so make sure when you order those parts.

Ok great, so let me see if I got this straight. do the smoke test first, if I get white smoke from the dipstick line, i should look at replacing with the kit you provided the link for, including the gasket. Now, if I dont get any smoke from the dipstick line, then I have to look at other option. I also took a look around the oil cap, there is a bit of oil spray around there also, could the cap seal just be old and letting oil under pressure out?

One last question, ive started to order the replacement parts for the vent system, but the Oil seperator wants to know a serial number range for the part. like (Up to engine serial 330413), you guessed it, where in the engine compartment do I verify my serial number before I order this online.

Thanks again
