Default onboard computer

OK. Another question(I'll learn alot by the time I'm done). I have a 95 850 with the computer readout under the speedo. Whenever I start the car, the only thing visible is the clock. I have to turn the switch w/reset button whenever I want to see something else like outside temp, or mpg. I don't have an owner's manual, so have no idea how it all works. Any help?

Wherever the switch is pointing is what display you should see, i.e. it the switch is pointing to temp, you should see the temp on startup. If not, then your ECM is fried or yourswitch is bad.

OK Thanks. But what happens is, if I leave the switch on outside temp, next time I start the car there are just a bunch of dashes there, next to the clock. If I turn the switch, left or right, and back to temp, the temp is there. I thought it would be there whenever you start the car, not have to turn the switch to see it. Same for any other display out of the 6 or 8 there. When I start the car, it is just dashes. Didn't know if that was normal.

Nope that's not normal. It should work just like you said. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to come on, but mine is almost always on outside temp and that's what I seel w/o touching the swicth.

That is because the computer has to take a sample of the outside air temp several times before it displays the temp, now if it is always dashes after a few minutes then you have a problem.

Thanks. So if all I have is dashes, a few minutes after the car has been running, how do I correct it?

Do you loose all functions or just the temp?

I lose all functions. Wherever I have the switch while driving, when I shut off the car and then come back, I have the time, but nothing else. I have to turn the switch for any display to appear.
