S70 Advice, New Guy Onboard
Hey guys, I'm 100% new to the volvo line up and don't know much about them besides the positive reputation. I'm sure some of you are members on sweedespeed forums where I initially posted but I got some time and figured I would try this one as well.
My dealership recently acquired a SUPER clean 2000 Automatic S70, non turbo car equipped with leather, moonroof, cruise, heated seats, memory seating, etc. The car has just under 60K miles (58) The car was a local trade in with a clean title and now i'm entertaining the thought of a possible purchase from my workplace.
I've spent 4 days driving the car and so far I love it. It's quiet, everything works minus the rear pass. window, its descent on gas, motor runs mint and the tranny shifts flawlessly. The only issue is that the car did develop an engine light on my way home tonight, besides this I cant complain.
I was simply going to ask you folks for advice, and things that can potentially go wrong with this car. I know the ETM is something that lets go often. If I do end up with the car, my plan is to-
1. Change the trans fluid (someone recommended a mobile one specific ATF, I think 3309?)
2. Oil Change with a Wix Filter
3.Spark plugs and wires-What's the best way to go with these? OEM?
Thank you all.

See if this recall applies to your S70 (I believe it does):
Auto Recall Date: 11/15/2006
Vehicle Component: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Estimated Vehicles Affected: 170099
2000 VOLVO S70 Defect Summary:
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, A COMBINATION OF THROTTLE POSITIONING SENSOR IRREGULARITIES, A DIRTY THROTTLE HOUSING, AND/OR INEFFICIENT SOFTWARE CALIBRATION MAY CAUSE A WARNING LAMP TO LIGHT AND THE SUBSEQUENT ONSET OF LIMP HOME MODES.
Defect Consequence:
THIS RESULTED IN A HIGH NUMBER OF VEHICLES GOING INTO THE LIMP HOME MODE WITHOUT NEED.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSTALL THE CURRENT SOFTWARE UPGRADE ONTO THE INVOLVED VEHICLES. THE RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 29, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLVO AT 1-800-458-1552.
Notes: VOLVO CARS OF N.A. LLC., R155

When servicing a Volvo, always stick to OEM parts. Volvos are extremely sensitive to the quality of parts and in general, OEM parts are the safest route to take (there are a few exceptions, though).
NEVER introduce anything other than the specified ATF into your tranny. Make sure you get the right stuff or the tranny would fail sooner than you can imagine.
As to plugs & wires, yes go with OEM. If your S70 uses same parts as the 850s, the plugs should be genuine Volvo (I do not know of the OEM for these plugs (made in England) and I used Bosch Platinum dual ground electrodes-German). The wires are of Bougicord, France.
I hope this is of some use. If your car is running fine with not much drop in gas mileage, the CEL may have been triggered by some nuisance reasons (dirty throttle housing, poor/loose electrical connections, etc...).

That's some good advice, I appreciate it. As for the automatic trans, I heard Mobile 3309 is the preffered oil? Plugs I was gonna go with OEM regardless.
I'm located in Canada so I will have to see if the recall you mentioned above applies to me. I wonder if they will require more info from me, such as perhaps some sort of a recall code? I didn't notice the car going into any sort of limp mode or anything like that, it starts and drives 100%.
I was going to try and clean the connectors that attach to the antenna ring located under the steering column and see if this works. This was recommended to me by another member with the same issue.
