Default Opening ABS unit

I have an ABS control unit that looks different than ones I've seen writeups on how to open.

I've got an ABS light on, and wanted to check for bad solder joints.

Anyone opened one that looks like this?

Sorry I haven't been able to find a spare one to open and inspect as of yet.

Hi,

Some ABS module housingsare made of ABS (a form of resin that looks & feels identical to plastic).

If you have removed all accessible fasteners and the cover still doesn't want to come off, I believe it is held in place with silicone adhesive or equivalent. In such case, you can only use mechanical means to open it and never use heat, as the internal electronic components will be damaged.

Sorry I couldn't be of better help.

Hi,

I haven't seen an ABS module with metal casing either, as most are made of ABS (a form of resin that looks & feels identical to plastic).

FYI the 1995 and older cars have those modules.
My R has that type.

I couldn't get it open, so I put it back in. Checked the codes, and in a short period of time I got codes for both rear sensors, and the brake switch sensor and the throttle sensor. I'm not sure if all these are problems or if my ABS controller is flaky.

It is the ECU (control module) that is the problem. Multiple sensors wouldn't go like that, unless if your car was nearly totaled. I would have it repaired by:

One drawback: this guy only deals with '96 or newer units. And as you indicated, it seems poor soldering is the problem.

That is what I figured. Plus it is intermittant.

So I think I'll be making a trip to the pull-a-part yard and see if I can find one. I don't want to wreck one trying to open it,without having a potential spare on hand.

So I picked up an ABS controller from the junkyard, and it seems I got the one with TRACS too. PN 9401542. Can I use this without any issues? I found a link mentioning adding TRACS to a non-TRACS car, but the question wasn't answered about just using the ABS controller as is.

It should work if you add the switch and fuses but not 100% sure never tried myself.

Do you need the switch to turn off the TRACS? Is the wiring there for the switch?

Default RE: Opening ABS unit 9401542

I have the same model except mine has a blue lable (pn 9401542).
I'd like to repair it but do not want to leave a hole in my car while it's out so would anyone let me rent one from then for $20 and I'll return it when right after mine is returned?

I would even consider buying one if anyone finds one at a bone yard. However, I would not want to pay more then $50 for it because of the $100 repair cost. Mine has tracs by the way.

thanks
