Was driving 30 mph and my upshift light came on while I was in drive. I drove the car and it felt like I lost 1st and 2nd gear. Pulled over turned car off and restarted car. Drove sort of okay but just to shift into another gear it took until 4k rpm. I checked fluid and it's not cherry red like a month ago. Its brownish red and smells like tap water. I suspect transmission is toast. I have driven cars with slipping gears and my previous car lasted 25k miles with a slip. So I know how it feels when transmission is on it's last legs.

Anyways I will take it to my local transmission shop for a free check tomorrow, But do you guys suspect it can be a PNP switch ?

 

Oh it wasnt flashing also. Just lit. I suspected maybe I was on 3 but nope was on drive.

1997. I took it to a good transmission shop and his diagnosis was the transmission is functioning 100 percent fine. Though he did recommend a flush and replace both axles. They're completely torn and ruined. 1997 Volvo 850 Turbo.

More and more repairs added to my list. Lol. It's a real nice car though. And for being 19 and currently unemployed. (Lost my job today) I cant really complain.

 

Does it have the 3-mode transmission? Is the "W" button pushed in? Push the "E" or "S" button

 

That is his problem. Stuck in W mode

 

Sounds like the PNP switch. It makes the car start in 3rd gear.
