it could be a head gasket. did you check your oil to make sure there was no coolant in it?

The leak may be only exposed when under higher temps and pressure. If the expansion tank is swelling with excessive pressure or steaming you have combustion gases entering the tank. Blown head gasket.

There are three chambers on a head. Cylinder, water, oil. When a head gasket blows it does not mean that you are going to mix all three. You can just break from the cylinder to the water or the cylinder to the oil. So, thinking you dont have a blown head gasket because your oil is still clean is not an effective test. If you really want to know go to Napa and get the test that detects exhaust gases in the expansion tank. Its like $40 but will answer your question.

Boxpin: I know what you're saying, I just didn't want the OP to be driving it with diluted oil. I understand what you're saying about the chambers

Here is a test you can do but I think the compression will be good.

Pull all the plugs but one. Turn the motor over by hand. If you feel resistance (compression), move the plug to the next cylinder and crank it over by hand again. If you get to a cylinder that doesn't give any resistance, that is the cylinder that has the bad seal. My guess is that the bad cylinder isn't bad enough to have zero compression.

The top hose will always be hotter than the bottom hose. The water comes from the engine via the top hose to the radiator, cools, then goes via the bottom hose back to the engine.

All because you have a head gasket breach doesn't mean the car is over heating. Not sure what the temp difference should be but it shouldn't be that much. Maybe 30 degrees.
