Default P1310 code and p0305 codes

Help!!!!
I have a 1996 850 GLT with about 158k miles.
On the freeway today my check enging light came on and started to flash.
I got off the freeway and the engine would not idle very well.
I had the codes checked and what came up was
Misfire from at least 1 Cylunder - TWC Damage and
Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
I have replaced the cap, rotor, plugs and had the codes cleared and still have the same problem.
I am thinking about replaceing the plug wires, but they seem to ohm out ok.
The enging seems ok at speed, it just does not want to idle, its very rough.

Any thoughts????

Thanks....Tom

What's the datestamp on the plug wires? Are you using OEM Bougicord wires?

Bad new for my 1996 850 GLT.
I took it to a local schop that works only on volvos and they said that the # 5 cyllinder has no compression.
They also said it could be a hole in the piston or a stuck valve.
I find that hard to belive, since the car run on the freeway fine I can hit 75 MPH without any problems.
I guess the next step is to pull the head.

Thanks...Tom

Sounds like the problem I chased, for MONTHS!! Do yourself a favor, do a compression test first, before replacing all kinds of parts and spending money! Mine ended up having great compression in 4 out of 5 cylinders, the other, was almost nothing! Bad valve! I got lucky, and bought a complete engine for $150 from one of my local salvage yards, and got the gasket kit from FCP in Groton CT. I wish I had checked the compression FIRST! I could have saved about $500 in replaced parts !
Good luck! Warren

I'm sorry about the problem.

Some shops try to "rape" customers, once they figure the customer doesn't know much about cars.

It may be a good time to self-teach how to do a compression test. All you need:

1. A good quality, screw-in type compression gage.
2. A service manual (Haynes would be ok in this case) & read through the procedure.
3. An assistant (some equipment can be operated without an assistant but are pricey).

A bore scope would reveal the internal condition of the cylinders, but a bore scope is usually very expensive.

So, wait removing the head until you're 100% sure that the cylinder #5 is shot.

Hey nmt0m35,

Man I doubt mnt0m35 still has the 850. Start a new thread if you'd like help.

Well, this will work I guess. The P0305 means that your #5 cylinder misfired. It's the one closest to the drivers side. You can pull the plug and make sure the gap is correct. If the plugs and wires are good you may want to do a compression test to make sure the motor is in good shape.
