Default Painting a spoiler

Need a little advice on painting a spoiler on a 95 850 Turbo. THose of you who have been following the story know it is my sons first car. The color is a sort of champagne/beige color (I can and will get the color code off the car to get an exact paint match).

Anyway, the clearcoat is badly flaking and the paint is very faded in spots, so I want to sand it all down, re-apply base coat and clear on it. Now I have done some minor paint and body work before, but I would like advice from anyone who has done a re-paint.

My plan is to sand it down smooth as far as I can, using progressively finer grits of paper, ending at about 1000 or 1500 grit. Then after degreasing and using a tack cloth, I plan on putting at least 3 coats of sandable primer on it and again finishing it with 1000 or so paper. Once that is dry, I plan on using 3 coats of base, and then finishing with 3 coats of clear.

Anyone see any issues with my plan?

Many thanks,

Glenn

I think that will come out great. I repainted my spoiler and I didn't do half as much prep as that and I think it looks very nice. I used the Volvo factory spray paint and it was a perfect match. It came with a can of clear but I had to buy another can of clearcoat. I have also heard of paintscratch.com for good prices on paint.

One other question before I get ready to tackle the spoiler re-paint job. Since the spoiler paint is badly faded and sun baked only on the top (sides and bottom look fine) should I remove the spoiler to paint it, or just mask off everything around it and do it that way?

I looked at removing the spoiler and it looks like there is just the two clamps on either end holding it on. I have not taken the trunk lid liner off yet to see how the wires for the 3rd brake light are hooked up. If anyone has taken off a spoiler (If I have to go that route in the first place) could you please let me know the easiest way to do it.

Many thanks,

Glenn

It is a pain they usually also have some Heavy Duty double sided tape that is a bear to get off.
