Default power steering- NEED HELP

So a power steering line is leaking bad. To the point where i cant just refill and drive. I need to get the car home, is there anyway to get the p/s pulley to just spin freely? without actually having it run the p/s pump? i dont want to ruin the pump.

How far do you have to drive? If think you'll bet okay on not damaging the pump unless your drive home is a couple hundred miles.

If the line have a split in it, I'd throw some duct tape at it for the drive home and see what happens.

If its leaking from a seal, try some Valvoline "Maxlife w/ Stop Leak" ATF. It did a great job getting the seals back in good shape for me. It's not an instant repair but it works very well in a day or two.

Duct tape is good! But when you can't find that, try this: A can of brake cleaner to hose of as much oil and crud as possible around the leak, then use a thick layer of ELECTRICAL tape. Reinforce that with some layers of duct tape, and you're good to go. The brake cleaner gets the crud off so the tape glue will stick to the hose. The electrical tape conforms better to rubber hose than duct tape does, so it works better as the foundation. The duct tape holds pressure better, so it reinforces the electrical tape. Years ago, I drove just over a thousand miles (headed home on leave while in the Army) with an electrical tape/duct tape patch on an upper radiator hose...in the summer. Granted, I had a 160 degree thermostat in my old Plymouth Fury III, so I could get away with the trick of driving with the radiator cap open to the first stop instead of closed all the way.

But still, a thousand miles...

Lynn your post makes no sense.

When you can't find Duct tape.......use electrical and duct tape?

Sounds like a woman's make up application session. Lol It makes perfect sense to me. You can get both within walking distance in any town.

I think what Lynn means is if duct tape is unavailable, clean the hose very well and wrap it with electical tape, using the whole roll!

Yes, sorry I didn't make that clear. Electrical tape is a viable option, but any tape will work better if it's not applied over a greasy surface. Use as much electrical tape as it takes to cover the affected area, and if possible, reinforce it with duct tape.

Again, sorry if not clear.

Or ... remove the belt and turn off everything electrical. If you pull the belt you will not be spinning a dry PS pump. You also will not be spinning the alternator but you should be able to get at least 30 min of run time off a charged battery if you have everything off and are only powering the ignition system itself.
If need be you can pull into an auto parts store half way there and pull the battery and have them charge it up for free.
Takes about an hour to full charge one on their chargers.
