Question pressurized crank case T850

I just bought a 1995 volvo sedan with a turbo 850 in it. The guy I bought it from told me that his machanic told him he needed to replace something on it because it was blowing oil out the dipstick and oil cap when removed. I have little knowlage of turbos and dont have a clue where the PCV valve is located I was going to pull the hoses off and check to see if they were plugged. Its very tight in there, hard to tell where hoses end or start for that matter. Anyone have a hose diagram or some knowlage of what might be causing the excessive crank case pressure? I was also told its no\rmal to have some? I thought this to be odd though like I said I have little experience with turbos.

Best is to clean the oil trap box and hoses , I did it on 4 cars and works excellent , you need to remove the intake manifold pull all hoses and tap box and use degreaser clean it good and you good to go
There is diagram off the system

I would replace it before cleaning it. Doesn't make any sense to go through all the trouble of removing it, just to clean it instead of putting a new one in.

What gilber said is right on the money. the pcv system is somewhat of a pain in the rear to do, because you have to remove the intake manifold and throttle bodyto get to everything. However, if you can get past that, it's a pretty straightforward job. You can order the pcv kit from FCP or IPD, both places are gonna be about a hundred bucks, give or take. Also while you're doing it, clean out the PTC, which is the sensor on the intake hose down by number 6 in the postedf diagram. Also, you will want to change your oil right after the change. It should solve your problems.

You need 10 min. to remove manifold, what is so hard about that?

Volvo 850 is one off easiest cars to work on, body and engine is designed so perfect that there is no part to give you problems

Dang goran, I wanna see the manifold come off in 10 minutes. I didnt say it was hard, i said it was a pain in the rear. Yes, it's a relatively simple job to do. It can be intimidating to someone who hasnt worked on cars extensively though.

Yeah, manifold in ten minutes? I wanna see a video of that. PCV system is fairly easy, it's the fact that you're taking all that apart, why would you not put in a new one when they're only a hundred bucks? Plus you can never guarantee a complete cleaning, hoses break, etc. For something that's so critical to these cars, not replacing it is just silly. silly. silly. silly.

Please don't tell me that when you clean your PCVs you just wipe down the manifold gasket and reuse that too?

Gibler 33 is 110% correct. Had exactly the same problem. I thought my motor was blown. I have the garden variety 10 valve 2.5 Litre and whenever I was going downhill off the power, when accelerating would gag the poor bugger behind me.
Anyhow, I was told a lot of Volvo owners wrecked their cars when only the flame trap was reponsible, as in my case. Replaced with a new one and presto.
Hope this helps you.

Man I love this place. It is like theropy to me. LOL. I come here an laugh every day. Really helps relieve some of the stress that I am carrying.

Back to the pressure at hand. Volvo calls for this system to be serviced or replaced every 60,000 miles. I have done it on my 850 and S70. About the same process on both. Both took me more than 5 hours. Yes I'm slow and yes I do count a trip to the hardware store and soda breaks as part of the process. From start to finish it's a mess. IMO, things are really not that tight in the 850. You should look under the hood of a '91 Eclispe.

1. If you have pressure REPLACE THE SYSTEM ASAP. You can cause a lot more damege letting it go, namely a rear main oil seal to the motor. Costly!!!
2. I did not try to clean the system, I just replaced it. Brittle hoses and plastic parts are just not worth getting into it and having to piece it together when not if something breaks.
3. Get instructions to do it off of this forum or somewhere we link to.
4. Here is a link to one of our sticky threads on the subject: "17. A how to for PCV system for beginners https://volvoforums.com/m_100465/tm.htm
5. Here is the link to the parts for sale: FCP http://www.fcpgroton.com/category-ex...137/by_year/45 iPd http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-850/Engi...-153-849-3936/

Have a good day and enjoy. BTW, if you are not one that fixes things, you may want to have a buddy do this for you. Pay him $100 or $200.
