Default Problem Putting Head Back On

Got the head back and it looks great. But when we looked at the Valve Cover we noticed a chip broken on end where it covers the cam shaft. See picture below. Now I'm not sure if this can be repaired, just put it on like it is or buy another (probably used) valve cover? Unless Tech tells me different I'm going with the latter.

In the picture you can see where the chip is missing and the chip is laying to the lower right of the picture.

If I am looking correctly, the chip is from the area where the cam gear will mount onto the camshaft... thus, it's area where it seals the around the camshaft. It probably could be repaired, but not any cheaper than buying a used valve cover.

I'd definitely look into a used one. There aren't a ton on car-part.com, but they are relatively cheap at $40-$50. - AB

Took it to two places and they both said put it on like it is. Welding the little piece back in would probably not be smooth enough. Buying another cover is not a good idea since they are machined together from the factory. And where the chip is located should not cause a problem because it is behind the seal. I did find a used one for around $50 delivered, but I think I'm going to pass.

I've never had a engine (until now) that had the camshaft with bearing caps built into the valve cover. After looking at it, I could see how this could be problematic because of the machining. Very strange. - AB

It looks like a 50/50 shot. It might leak and it might not.

Yes the head and Valve cover are machined together. About the only thing to do now it to give it a try and see what happens.

Hopefully you will get really lucky. I will be praying for you.

We are going to smooth out the sharp edeges where it broke off and put some sealant around it. The lead mechanic at the Volvo dealership looked at it and was almost certain that it would not leak. The guy at the machine shop that did the head said he wouldn't do anything other than put a little sealant around it. Said he could machine it and fix it, but it would cost and wouldn't be worth it.

Hopefully I'll have this thing running again in the next couple days. I want my car back. Bought a 2000 Nissan Frontier that I have been driving, but I want my Volvo back. Drove the V70 yesterday, but even that's not my R.

I hope all goes well. I think you will end up ok in the end.

Keep us posted as the progress goes. I bet you can't wait to drive it again.

I know the feeling I have been going from driving my Mustang to driving my Wifes Chevy Barretta when mine breaks down. (Can't always afford to fix it right away).

Should have it running tonight. Got the top of the head on last night and the timing belt is in place. Need to finish up some minor stuff like putting on the air filter box, the timing belt cover and put in new oil and coolant. Figure another hour or two at the most and we should see if all our work paid off. Probably go out and look for some BMW's to blow their doors off. Hope to take it up to Cleveland this weekend to see the Steelers beat the Browns.

Now Jim, I know our high pressure turbos are fast but....................I can guarantee you that you will never ever blow the doors off my Hartge H-3 BMW.............never! So, be careful of what model you run against. Glad you got the 850 back together and have a merry Christmas!
Reg.

I didn't say I was going to pick on just any BMW, but I know there is at least one out there that thinks he is faster than me and I can beat him. I just have to find the right one. Maybe my sons 325IS or my son in-laws 330I. My daughter has the S80 T6 and I think he thinks it's faster than his 330I. I just know I'm ready to run. Driving this four cylinder pickup truck is getting old.

Check and make sure the cam position sensor plug didn't fall apart. Also you might want to remove the cam sensor and make sure the little cup looking thing is on properly. It is only supposed to go one one way but it can be put on wrong.
