Default radio code problem

So I screwed up my code and the radio displayed "off". I disconnected the radio and let it sit in the car for a few hours. Re-connected the radio and powered it up. Still get "off". So I disconnect the positive power cable on the battery for two hours. Re-connect it and the damn radio still says "off". How do I get it back to where I can enter the radio code?

If disconnecting the battery doesn't work, I have no clue.

Call the dealer and ask?

So I believe you can turn the volume control **** all the way to the left and then turn it on again and enter the code (unless you already tried it)?

Just found the following at Matt's site:

If your radio says OFF, leave the ignition on *in the first position for 2 1/2 to 3 hours in order for it to display CODE. Or, as forum member Rhett says: In my 1996 850, I can clear the OFF state by pulling the fuse for the radio (#7 in my car). That's a bit simpler than leaving the ignition in I for a couple of hours -- particularly if you don't have a garage.
*Not sure if they really meant the 1st detent or the 2nd-ACC.

If it still doesn't do the trick, try pulling the radio out (press on the slim long tabs on the sides of the unit), disconnect the connectors and re-connect them to see if it gives up to your commands. If thisdoesn't do, have a visit tothe dealer.

Hi Kanji and white out,

I tried removing fuse 7 a couple of nights ago and it worked great.
I did have to wait a minute or two before replacing the fuse but
that was a lot better than disconnecting the battery or waiting 2-3
hours with the ignition on.
My car is a 96 also.

Hi John,

I believe it would also work for white out, and I'm sure he would appreciate it.

I was kind of surprised that the radio was made in Japan (Alpine?), because it didn't look as good, but it was made during the early 90s so that was probably why.

BTW, what time do you wake up in the morning? You seem to post replies sometime between 5 & 6am, which is about 5 to 6 in the evening across the Pacific. Just curious.

Thanks,

Kanji/JPN

#7 fuse didn't work. I had to use the ignition for 2 hour thing. But it works fine now.

Nick,

Good work. Congratulations!

Kanji,

Yeah, I'm usually up at 5am. It's the only time I have to
get on the forum. The problem is that I'm usually more asleep
than awake when I post. Many times I look at my previous
post and ask "wow, did I really write that?...I must have still
been asleep."
I didn't know that radio might be an Alpine. Good to know.

Best regards,
John
