Hi there,
I just d\i\d the rear main seal on my 96 850 and all i can say is that its not a too bad of the job provided you have sufficient equipment/tools and some physical help. It took me 2 days to finish it with few nominal damages but i m very happy to see no more dripping under the car.

Hi Guys
JPN..thanks for the pic...(kinda krindging...)...i think i may have a bad seal...I was just snapping some pics of where it is leaking...let me know if it's that...

Here is a closer shot of the surrounding are:

IF it is this, what are the effects/symptoms? is this why i'm loosing oil? I don't have the smoke coming out of the dipstick, and not much smoke at startup...occasionally get apuff but much less...and the exhaust smell is not as bad as it used to be.
Also can i still drive the car like this? will it eventually kill the engine?
thanks

That looks like a Cam seal might be leaking and running down the back of the motor.
If you look where the tranny meets the motor there is a slit almost where those 2 screws are by the mount. If it was running out the slit that would be the rear main. That looks like it is a little higher and running down.

Hey Tech, how are you? i'm not sure if it is the sear or a cam seal...basically it's dripping from where this shaft is..the shaft goes towwards the passanger side of the car , where it looks exactly the same as this pic, but it's not leaking on the pass. side. just the drivers side...if it is the cam seal, what are the effects? can i leave it like this? thanks

You can leave it for a little while as long as you keep an eye on the oil level.
If it was the rear main it would be coming out of the middle of the area under the car where the tranny meets the engine. Not really by the axle.
I am doing ok I guess.

This looks like a leaking axle seal and it should be a very easy job to do (as compared to R Main Seal). But this will not result in loosing engine oil but might be hitting on tranny fluid. But from the pics it looks like a very small leak to do any noticeable fluid loss but you can drive it without any worries for as long as you want butshould check the level every week or so.
