Greetings..... '97 GLT Turbo....

Ok, I am replacing the blower motor, easy enough. The original has a bad bearing/motor. I just discovered that the replacement one I got has a cracked
fan blade. So, I want to remove the good fan assembly and install it on my good motor.

A. How do I remove the fan cage assembly from the fan motor?

I looked-up some threads here and saw the advice to use hammer and nail punch and simply whack the metal axle where it runs through the fan cage. I tried this..but no luck and stopped before I damaged anything...

Question: In doing this, does the large, black plastic housing need to come off the motor assembly? If so, how?

ok, solved this .....

 

How did you solve it? I could not get the fan cage off either.

 

Ok, here you go:

A. Be very careful and take your time..

B. Remove the brass screw on the back of the black plastic housing
C. Remove the rubber gasket around this screw.
D. Use a nail punch: Insert nail punch in the hole where the brass screw
was. Gently tap the motor and cage out from the black plastic
housing. I used 3 short pieces if 2 x 4's, two stacks of them, to make a
sort of support cribbing. Just place the housing on these to support
you need to do...

E. After several taps the motor and cage will drop out of the housing.
F. Now you are ready to tackle removing the cage from its axle.
G. Use the 2 x4's to support just the fan cage and tap (hard) the
small bit of axle that is exposed above the cage. When the axle
becomes flush w/ the top of the cage, use you nail punch to
finish it off. Be gentle.....
