Default Replacing Turbo on '97 850 GLT Wagon

The turbo in my '97 850 GLT wagon is shot. I was just wondering if anybody knew how hard it would be to replace it on my own. I do the vast majority of car repairs myself. But I've never replaced a turbo and I was just curious if it would be worth it to just give it to a shop to do. Thanks.

oh and also I was wondering if it would be possible to use the T5 turbo, or even the R turbo. I've heard that the ECU regulates the boost pressure, so I wasn't quite sure if I used the T5 or the R turbo if my ECU would screw up my fuel mapping or if it would work fine. Thanks again.

Most people that I have heard that done it had the ECM upgrade.

Im not sure if it would mess it up or not.

It is not to bad to replace the turbo, just need to drain oil and water lines from the turbo.I just used my oil changing pan and let the fluids drop in it .I think that car has a SAS valve if you take yor heat shield off you should see it.The boost on that car is only 6psi because of the turbo if you are not going to remap the ecu I would leave the 13g on the car.

ok thanks a lot. I couldn't find any similar turbos at the junkyard and I finally got mine out today. It took me a while, but eventually it came out. I think I'm just gonna get this one rebuilt or see if I can find an already rebuilt one. Thanks for the quick responses.

Yeah I'm about to start looking online for it. Do you guys have any idea what the turbo model designation numbers are. It just occurred to me that I'm not sure what they are. Oh and thanks for the tip about the copper rings. One of my friends used his old copper rings and his turbo dumped coolant and oil everywhere.

Have your current turbo rebuilt professionally. It shouldn't cost much more than $300. Remember to use a new turbo oil feed line. Shop and Compare, starting with Forced Performance...

And one other thing... For the price of a rebuilt, your existing turbo housing can be over-bored for a larger compressor wheel, such as -15G, -16G, -16T, or -17C.
