return gas line question????
I had gas smell on the passenger's side of my '93 850after I turned off the car. I found a hard plastic hose that goes from the front of the carto the back of the car hangning down with one end exposed and connected to nothing! I found the other end and it had a rubber hose (with no clamps) that must have been used as a coupling to mate to the tube going up front torwards the engine. This hosesmelled like gas, not cool since it is kind of near the exhaust! There never was a leak or a puddle so I assume it was some type of gas line vapor return to the gas tank?!?!?!Does anyoneknow exactly what this is and what affect if would have had when it was disconnected? Will the car perform better now that it is fixed?
Thanks guys for your help!

RE: return gas line question????
Hi bagelluvr,
Greetings.
If you have not noticed drivability problem or a puddle of fuel on the ground while at idle, the line is probably an evaporative emissions line, probably the one that should be connected to the charcoal canister in the engine compartment, but where is the line disconnected? In the engine compartment, or is it under the passenger compartment? Try tracing the line again and tell us exactly where the open end is, as well as where the other side is connected to.
If you see fuel dripping from the open end (though you've noted that you did not see fuel drip), do not start the engine as you know it is a fire hazard. Rather, tow it to the nearest Volvo dealer/shops that specialise in Swedish/European makes, if possible.
