Default Service light

I know that there are many posts about this stupid light, but I can't find the answer I need. Yes, my damned service light came on yesterday and will go off after a minute or so, but I have no idea what to do about it. There are no codes or anything that I can clear. I have 226,682 miles on the car, but it is not the original engine. I don't know the exact milage of the engine, but I believe it's about 80,000. The timing belt was changed prior to the swap as per the previous owner (a Volvo mechanic). What should I do?

First of all, the purpose of the "Service" light is to remind you that it is time to bring your car in for an oil change. It is nothing more than an indicator to show that 5,000 miles have elapsed since the light was reset.

Most likely your 1993 850 GLT has ODB-I. You can press a sequence of buttons in the engine compartment to reset the light. Sorry, I don't know what the sequence is. Browse thru older posts regarding service light to find out correct sequence.

Not due for an oil change as it was done last month...

I know that there is a sequence to reset the lights and know how to do so, but there aren't any codes being pulled (well, other than the hvac, but that's a different issue) so I don't know what to clear.

The codes turn on the CEL not the Service light. The car does not know the oil was changed. The light just comes on 5,000 miles after is was reset the last time. You're lucky you have a 93 and can reset it. I have a 97 and a 98 and mine are on every time I start the car for about a minute or two.

is a 1994 on the OBDII system as in the 97 and 98's, does reseting the service light on a 1994 have to be done at a dealer or with a OBDII scan tool or someething?

Pretty sure 94 was ODB-I and 95 was a split year where some were ODB-I and some ODB-II. I had a 94 and it was definitely not ODB-II.

Once the wire is in there make sure the key is on. Push the button 4 times and then watch for it to light up again when it does push it once. Then when it lights again push 5 times then wait for it to light then again 1 times. The the light will flash about 5 times fast to tell you it is reset.

So what's the procedure for 95+

I have the simple diagnostics under the hood (push the black button, two boxes near washer resevoir cap), AND the OBD-II in the 'ash tray' area under the stereo...

?

I have a 95 850 Turbo (split year I guess, it seems to have both OBDI and II ??)

Same procedure. Look at the previous page. Socket A7 if i remember correctly.

4 shots of 1-5-1 rum is the saying.

The pics will be gone within the next few days and be sure to save them. Actually, if you've downloaded them from that web site, you should have the same copies in your PC in PDF format.

Cheers,

As someone said, 95 was a split year for the diagnostics. We are lucky in that our 95 does not need to have a specialtool to reset the light. For those for those of you that are bothered by the light and don't want to go to the dealer to turn it off, you can always remove the bulb from the instrument cluster. Just remember to be vigilant about service <grin>

The ISO tool from www.obd-2.com will reset the service light and the CEL, among other things.
