RE: Sfifter illumination -no light?..
You do have the lights on when you expect the center console to light up right? Becuase oddly enough just a couple hours ago I was leaving a resteraunt and it was very dark, and it didnt light up, even though the lights automatically turn on when I start the car. But, the lights were on and the PRND3L did not light up, but when I switched on the high beams I think they came on..not sure, I cant really recall becuase when I started backing out the lights werent on, but i noticed as I was going down the road a couyple minutes later, it was on..wierd..

Greetings from Vermont.
Yes the shifter illuminations do light, you need to take the console out and change the bulbs. Haynes' manual has a good instruction in this particular procedure, should you decide to do it yourself.
There is a thread within the first few pages on the same topic, I believe. Wait, I just found it:

Yep, burned out bulb. I did this same repair on our 95 850. The dealership wanted about $20 for the bulb and holder as it was only sold as a set. I tool the console apart, accessed the bulb, went to Radio shack and found a replacement for about $3.
Good luck,
Glenn

This is the bulb you'll need for most of the dash switches:

You usually don't need to buy a new holder. Just unwrap the leads from the old holder and pull the bulb out.

I believe I used the same bulbs as well. They were a bit brighter than the originals, but I thought the originals were a bit too dim for my taste.
I'd also like to suggest that you replace all bulbs in the center console area (except for LED's), as it'll be disappointing to see another one going out after you put everything back together.
Good luck,
JPN

RE: Sfifter illumination -no light?..
Hi m1964,
I'm not sure how many bulbs are there, but there are:
- Shifter position indicators
- Seat heater indicators
- Window indicators
- Cigar lighter indicator (I never smoke but like to have the illumination, as I'm an illumination kind of guy)
The lights on the dash switches are easy to replace, but the main cluster requires the removal of dash top cover. Should you decide to do the bulbs on the main cluster, I would replace all bulbs.
Someone please indicate exactly how many bulbs are required in the center console, as I never opened it.
Regards,
JPN

RE: Sfifter illumination -no light?..
Thanks, I thought there were more. The sear heaters are changed from the top w/o console removal, same for the lighter. Windows indicators are part of the switch (almost new in my car), so I guess it's only one bulb for the shifter position. Anyways, will check with dealer where I am taking my DF's XC90 tomorrow - maybe the bulb is cheaper now..?
