Default Smoking turbo- newly replaced

HI Guys.

I am new to this site and I have a 1994 Volvo 850 turbo.

I have an 850 Turbo, 1994 and I just replaced my old turbo with a good used one. I installed the turbo, hooked up the lines, put in new gaskets, o-ring, copper washers etc.

My problem is that when the car is on for a minute it starts to smoke from the top of the turbo. Nothing is leaking. Im too afraid to drive it or take it anywhere, could it be burning carbon from the inside of the turbo?

Before this i was driving with a bypassed turbo and no smoke or any trouble at all. If it were my PCV system would it not have smoked before, thats why i dont think to inspect pcv and fix that because it was never the issue. Could it be Coolant burning off, even though there is no leaks. If i want to test the turbo what do I do to check end shaft play etc.

I dont know what to do but i wont drive it until I know?

Also do these motors have a small tick in them?

Please help. You people are great!

It is wise that you should always rebuild a used turbo before putting it in.

Wiggle the shaft side to side and in and out....I should not touch the compressor walls. Also spin the turbine by hand...it should spin freely.

Also start the car and listen....THe turbo should not be making any grinding nosie as if the blades are touching the compressor walls. then you should hear the turbo stop when the car is shut off.....

No shaft play, it is not touching the compressor walls, it spins freely, when the car is turned off it does stop and no grinding noises. Any other ideas?

It could be burning off oil or coolant, like you said.....

Wait for others to reply.....Tech will be on tomorrow.

Red face

TIPSP,

A while back you posted this vacuum diagram below:

https://volvoforums.com/forum/showth...=turbo+diagram

I think that I may have the lines backwards and this could be causing smoking in my turbo.

I need to ask some very stupid questions so bear with me:

In the diagram number 16 is the pressure regulator that the hoses hook up to, when I look at the regulator as it is installed in the car the colours from top to bottom show a yellow dot, then blue, then red.

I need help to route these properly and am confused by the diagram where blue and red are different than mine:

When i look at the diagram and assume that the pressure regulator is facing the same way it is installed in the car, then the top port on the diagram (which is yellow on my regulator is going to the turbo nipple, is that right yellow goes to the turbo nipple??

The blue dot is the line that goes to the intake hose??, its a short piece about 10cm,

In the picture blue is going to the top of the turbo beside number 21??

The red which is on the bottom of my regulator should go to what number on the picture?

and finally the line that has the white on it, this hose snakes under the intake manifold yes?

Sorry I am just confused from the picture but this could be the problem, backwards lines.

Thanks in advance again,

If it was smoking bad before it will smoke some till it all burns out of the cat converter.

Thanks for the reply. The turbo I had oringinally in this car did not work, as it was by-passed and it did not smoke. The newly installed one did smoke on idle and now it does not smoke any more, there was a little coolant in it and now it is fine.

but now I want to make sure that I have vacuum lines correct. I am trying to find out where on the pressure regulator does the vacuum line go that attached to the turbo boost nipple at the bottom of the turbo. The diagram i posted in this thread is confusing. After putting the whole thing back together yesterday I took the car out for a drive and it seemed fine. But I have never known what this car feels like with the turbo installed because my other one was bypassed. If my vaccuum lines are not correct will the turbo lag or work at all?

Please help with the vaccuum routing, especially the line from the turbo boost nipple?

Much appreciated

I colored the wastegate lines blue and red, because we were showing someone how to install a MBC without disconnecting the whole TCV.....

I believe the colors on the TCV are like this:
boost pressure (red) from tubro compressor housing?
by-pass valve (white) Surge line?
pressure regulator (yellow) to the wastegate?

Tech, is this correct?

Edit:// I found this pic....

If this picture is correct (great pic by the way) it would seem that I have my boost line and waste gate line backwards, funny thing is that the car is still performing fine, but i feel that it should have more power from what I have heard of what a turbo aspirated car should feel like. I hope i didnt mess anything up when i switched the lines and took it for a drive??

I will change the two lines around and see if it is better, but will also wait to hear what tech says.

Thanks very much so far for the great help! I will switch the vaccum lines tonight and see what happens and keep you posted.

Sam

Having the lines switched should not mess anything up at all. Put the lines correctly and see what happens.
