Default stalling

I have a 95 850 turbo with ~310,000 km (~220k Mi). I am having problems with the car stalling while driving. The car seems to start "chocking" and the rpm's drop while on the accelerator, and then the car will eventually stall. Then if I go to start the car again it generally will not start but will turn over, or it will start and stall quickly. I have found the that once it stalls if I leave the car for sitting and do not try and start it will start again after about 5-10 minutes. The car also always starts cold. I had this problem about 3 summers ago but was not a regular problem and had seemed to go away. Could someone please tell me what the probably cause is? I am kind of thinking fuel pump?

My check engine light is currently on and the code says that it is an emissions problem/sensor, and has been on longer than the stalling problem. I also had a problem with the breather system in early 2010 (when the car car stalls now no oil is pushed through the dipstick).

Thanks for any help/suggestions

I have not tried that, the fuel pump is in the gas tank but can get to it from the trunk right (passenger side behind spare tire under the carpet)?

If the car starts after tapping would that mean that I need a new fuel pump? It has also come to my attention that I have not changed the fuel filter since I have had the car and I have put ~50k KMs (30K mi) on it. Would it be in my best interest to change the fuel filter first before I change the fuel pump if that is the problem.

Thanks

If it starts when tapping... then your pump is starting to go... I would defiantly change the fuel filter also, I change mine every 10k miles..

So next time it stalls tap on the fuel pump and that sould be a good indicator if it is the fuel pump.
The fuel filter is a pretty easy do it your self change right? would this be the method I should follow: Answers.com - How do you change the fuel filter on a 1997 Volvo 850
Also if if tapping on the fuel pump does not help the car start are these the other problems I should consider:
- Faulty fuel pump
- Faulty fuel pump relay
- Faulty CPS (Cam Position Sensor)
- Faulty ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor
- Faulty TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)

This just happened to me today. My daughter had the car a couple of weeks ago for about 4 or 5 days and she said it happened to her twice.

My guess would be 1. Fuel pump. It really flet like I ran out of gas. 2. Fuel pump relay. I'm going to take a good relay with me until it happens again. I'm going to leave the relay cover off since it is not suppose to rain for a week.

When it happened to me, I was 1/4 mile from home and it just sputtered and stopped. Then it started right back up and sputtered and died again right away. I sat on the side of the road for 2 minutes (felt like 10) and it started up and drove fine to the house. I'm about to go get gas and across town (15 miles) so I'll see if it acts up again. You know how gremlins are, it probably wont, but I'll have the relay in hand just in case. I kinda wish it would NOT start right back up so soon. But if it starts cutting off consistantly a relay swap will tell me quick.

I will be surprised if it's the CPS, ECT, or TPS. Those problems usually dont cause stalls, do they?

Oh yea, I seriously doubt that a fuel filter will cause your car to randomly stall.

So my car stalled again I tapped on the fuel pump cover and it started but then later that day I turned the car off and a few minutes later tried to start it and would not start. I tried to tap on the fuel pump cover again but that did not work. I left the car where it was and went back a couple hours later and it started.
Does this mean that it would be fuel pump relay or does it mean both the pump and relay should be replaced?

You have to actually tap on the pump, not the cover. LOL

Happened to me last week. I checked the pressure on the fuel rail and it dribbled out...it should spray. Left me stranded several miles from home. AAA to the rescue. Got home and pulled the pump, it had voltage but was not running. Off to Pick-n-Pull for another pump. Installed and fired right up.

I had symptoms but did not pay attention. Couple times taking off at lights, normal driving it would hesitate, almost stall making me think ....what was that? Then it was fine. Guess it wasnt.

I guess I need to go to the YARD and pull a pump just to be on the safe side. Do you know which pumps will work? I heard that there are two different sizes. Also, will one work from an S70? How much do you usually give for a used one?

I was looking at FCP & iPd and those sites scare me a little when it comes to purchasing fuel pumps. Sounds like the way to go it to simply purchase an entire assembly but they make is sound like my car has 2 insert options and I need to take the tank/pump apart to see if I can even get a new pump insert to replace my bad pump (assuming that my pump is bad). Who has experience with this situation? Can I take an assembly out of any 850/S-V70 pre 2000 and toss it into my T-5R?

I recently stuck the pump from an S70 into the housing from my 1996 850. It's not the sweetest fit in the world, but it works.
