Default Starter noise?

Hi all,

I was reading another thread in an attempt to learn if my starter was bad and I saw someone had posted these pics of 850 starters

I may need to replace my starter too and the pics are no longer links. Can anyone re-post them?

My 96 850 turbo wagon was making an occasional noise like a spinning part (flywheel?) being contacted by a stationary one (bendix gear?). Lateral g force from turning the wheel one way or the other while moving seemed to change it. Today when I started the car in real cold weather for the first time it sounded like the starter gear remained engaged while the motor idled. I shut it off and started it again several times -same result.
Fired it up one last time and pulled into garage. when I shut it off and opened the hood the idle control valve was buzzing. It quit after 20 seconds or so and I started it again and the sound it made at an idle and the IC valve noise after shutdown repeated again.

I work on cars but this is my first Volvo. I've already learned to pull the fan first if I need to get at the starter but the pics would help and if anyone recognizes these symptoms please tell what you know. On my GTO, I wouldn't even pull the starter, just the solenoid.

Thanks

Greg

This is a how to on doing the Volvo PCV, but if you scroll down, you will see some pictures of how the start is connected to the motor and where the bolts are that hold it in.

Default which one?

OK, now the starter does not 'chunk in' when the key is turned it simply starts turning the motor so I know it's already engaged.
Two questions;
The starter motor itself is fine, the solenoid is the problem. Are they separate parts. Can the solenoid be replaced by itself?

Assuming a no on Q1, there are two starters available locally, A Bosch for $250 with a two year guarantee and a world something-or-other AP house brand for $125 with a lifetime guarantee.

I know you guys recommend the Bosch, but thought I'd ask. If it's an easy R&R the lifetime guarantee appeals as well as half the price.

What say you?

Thank you,

Greg

Default Running again

R&R was easy so I went with the cheap starter. Pulled it out of the box and it had BOSCH stamped into the steel of the solenoid.

On another subject, anyone know which plug to look at for yellow dash lights on the right side that intermittently stay on for no reason? I think one of them is the tracs light. they always light at the same time and go out together as well. Some days they are on all day, others not at all. Someone told me there was a plug under the hood with an iffy connection that causes this.

Cheers,

Greg
