Strange noise when I turn off Volvo 850 engine
Hi,
There is strange noise when I turn engine off and it comes somewhere driver part of engine. I recorded it an you can hear it here http://andruskannel.planet.ee/volvo_...ylitamisel.mp3
or http://andruskannel.planet.ee/volvo_mootor/
Recording may be weak so you need to turn on volume. Can anybody say me what makes that noise.
Thank You
Andrus

Thank you slimflex2. I made video though I think it does not give answers. I let you know if I figure out what makes that noise.

The mass air flow sensor is attached to the air cleaner housing and is used by the engine management computer to calculate how much air is entering the engine. It does this by using a "hot wire" in the center of the sensor. If the wire gets dirty from lack of timely air filter replacement or contaminated with oil from an oiled air filter it will send an erroneous signal and cause poor running. They can be cleaned and sometimes that will bring them back to life. You want to use a cleaner made for them and not just brake or carb cleaner.

It sounds like a bad serpentine or timing belt system bearing or the AC clutch. It's such a loose metallic sound it's hard to pin down. I'd pull the serpentine belt off and spin all the things it turns to see if you come up with something loose. It does sound a lot like a bad or loose AC clutch assembly or bearing. If nothing I'd pull the timing cover to get to the T belts tensioner and idler to see if it's one of them.

My suggestion was going to be a loose alternator cooling fan ring. Happened to me many years ago. The little stamped "fan" turbine on the alternator of an elderly vehicle turned loose from its attachment behind the alternator pulley. The noise it made from the time the key was turned until the engine started was covered up by the rest of the engines noise (loud pipes, etc. I've grown up some since then.). The rest of the time, it would sling itself slightly off center and stay there. When the engine was turned off, it would rattle and clang for two or three seconds, then stop. Nothing broke, no smoke, everything worked, and it stopped quickly enough after I killed the engine that I couldn't see what was causing the noise by the time I got my head under the hood. So I didn't worry about it. A buddy pointed it out one afternoon while we were tuning the engine for the upcoming Saturday night cruise. The alternator lasted longer than the rest of the car did, so it was never an issue, just an annoyance.
