Blower Fan wont stop!!!
Hi Guys,
I have a 1996 Volvo 850 GLT and a few days back, my heater blower motor automatically jumped to the highest speed and won't stop running even after I shut the ignition off and take the keys out. I had to take the fuse off (for blower speed 4) in order for the fan to shut off. I am not sure what the problem could be. Need help diagnosing!! .Your answers will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

RE: Blower Fan wont stop!!!
Do you have Electronic Climate Control (ECC)? If so, what mode was this in? If in AUT mode, my guess is that your ECC Resistor has gone bad. Generally when that happens, it's best to replace the resistor as well as the blower motor. If you want to limp by, you can not use AUT mode and manually adjust the climate control. I did this for about a month until I had time to install the new equipment. It took me less than an hour to fix.
If this is the case, expect it not to be cheap. Blower motors with cages run about $139 and the resistor is around $100 - AB

Thanks for the quick response B1mmer. I don't think it was on AUT mode when it happened. We usually don't use AUT mode. I did notice the lights under AUT mode blinking when i first started the car for a few months. I suppose it could have been going and was trying to let me know? What does the ECC resistor look like and where is it located? Is there a resistor for manual climate control also. If so, could the manual Climate control resistor have gone bad? Thanks again for the help.

Does your blower work on any speed, or just on high? If the latter, the resistor will need to be replaced. It's located (near the blower), behind the glovebox. It's fairly big, 4" long with a base of about 2" square, which surprised me when I received it . - AB

RE: Blower Fan wont stop!!!
hey, hoping posting in here will bump to the top... Anyway, im thinking my blower resistor is gone, and the motor is on its way, but i want to make sure before i spend the money to replace... Ive got a 96 850, the blower will not stop running while headlights/runners are on, but if i turn them off the motor shuts off about 2 seconds after i kill the lights. The lights flash, and im going to check codes today again, last time i saw nothing... Anyway, the motor still blows air but not as hard as i think it once did, so maybe i can still save it.. I also found that the heat controls for the passenger side work, but the driver's side would take some fiddling with (some turning it down and up several times, some swearing, a lovetap or two) and i got it to blow hot air again. I cant get it able to blow on my legs, regarldess of what the control tells me, does change betweeen windshield and face, if i turn the ****.. The a/c does also not work, i believe this is the evaporator, b/c thats what the guy who sold me the car said, i think this summer ill actually get to fixing it (thanks for that writeup on how to do it tech). Would that have anything to do with it? It seems to me that the reisistor is gone, but occasionally the fan will go to a lower speed if i have it on it, but usually the headlights on=fan at highest speed. The weird thing for me is the whole headlights are a switch part, anychance its a ground problem instead? its also ecc
thanks

If you pull the radio out you can reach up and push the ECC out from the back. I would cover your wrist with a rag though. Sometimes when it lets go it can cut your wrist on the dash.
You will need to get either a Volvo specialist or the Dealer to read the codes.
