Default switch unit

does anyone know if the window switch units marked "auto" are interchangeable with the ones that aren't?
what year did this start, '97?

My 94 has AUTO written on the switch. Here's the thing- Maybe some had it, some didn't, maybe my 94's switch was replaced (could be- 250,000 miles is a long time) Another possibility: The labeling on the switches? It's silk screened on. Some interior cleaners will remove the silk screening. I know that "Tuff Stuff" does. So maybe it used to say it, but it's gotten wiped off by cleaning.
