1993 was the first year the 850 was sold in the US and the GLT was the base model I do believe. Anyway, the best advice I can give you is that if you are not sure about what to look for, have a mechanic you trust look it over before you buy it. Volvos are great vehicles and will last a long time, but they do require regular maintenance to make it to the 200 and 300K miles they are noted for.

Mine is a '93 and I love it... The only thing that's kind of a pain is that there are a few things which are year specific. For instance, 1993 was the ONLY year that the 850's had a 4-bolt wheel (all other years are 5-bolt). In addition, the '93s use a single-bulb headlight while the 94's-97's use a dual-bulb system... Not a biggie, but there are a few things like that. I bought mine 3 years ago with about 200k miles on it for $1800, have put maybe $3k into it over that period of time and have 250,8xx miles on it now. I wouldn't hesitate driving it just about anywhere as the only "major" problem is that the evap for the AC leaks a little and I need to charge it 2 or 3 times over the summer months.

I had a '93 and in hind sight it was an ok car, nothing special. Had a transmission issue at 120,000 miles, luckily found a reman at junkyard (transmission is year specific also, kinda hard to find a good one) I would pass and look for a 95 and newer with apreference to the R code. IMO

Mine, being a 1994 is a great car, expensive to maintian, but a great car.
I agree that if this is your first Volvo, and it would be judging by the year, you will really want to have this car checked out very very well. It is easy to find a quote good deal unquote that turns into a money pit really quickly. And you dont want to be stuck in a position of not being able to drive the car because it is always in the shop and on the other hand you dont want to be stuck with a car you cant sell because its always in the shop and youre just trying to get your moneys worth out of it.
Are there ANY records of service that you can access for the car? Can you track down the previous owner through a title search for some info?
Im not going to mention what has gone into The Anvil to get it where it is right now but in about $3K I think I will be where I want to be.
