got a 96 850 wagon,,just drove it to work for the first time,,it has 97k on it, dont know if it has had the timing belt done or not...is it a non-interference engine?..my miata is, if the belt goes the car just stops no valve/piston damage...Rog

Yes, it is an interference engine. I forget the recommendation, but I believe you are over.

timing belt requires replacement every 60,000...might also want to replace the Idler Pulley,Tensioner Pulley, and Hydraulic Tensioner.some choose to do the water pump too.but our pumps are very reliable and rarely go bad.so its up to you.make sure you go oem and buy the continental belt. go to this link for some great information..

Thanks guys, I found the maintenance log and there was nothing in it..popped the hood and found a metal sticker saying the belt had been changed 01-29-03..since the car is a 96 with 97k on it I assume it was done around 67k, so I should be good for another 30k or so,,not like I'm gonna race it or anything, its a very comfortable car though,,but I only live 4 miles from work ,only put 25k on my miata in the last 8 years,, cant afford to travel much, plus when its not raining I mostly ride my honda 250 scooter.....the wagon is for my radio control planes and hauling stuff in general, took my 91 year old dad out for breakfast this morning, he really liked it,,it makes a pop/bang noise underneath while riding, the guy said some kinda mount needed some grease, I'll crawl under there and check it out soon,,,thanks again,,...Rog

wouldnt be a bad idea to check the condition of the belt anyway.for the noise i would inspect the exhaust mounts and hangers.maybe even the cover on the cat?

Front spring seats are very common to fail on these cars and they are not very expensive althought you have to take the font struts out to replace them. some people have replaced them with the ones for V70 because they are more biefier and hence more longer lasting.

Timing belts on the 94-98's are every 70K or 5 years whichever comes first. If has not been changed since 03, I would have it done just to feel safe.

93's and some of early 94's came with less wider belt and therefore their belt life is shorter.

Jimk I like your collection, the wagon looks just like mine only nicer..5 years?!!...the tb in my Miata is 18 years old and has 92k on it, sure it'll go any minute now but , it is a non interference engine so no biggie, my mechanic friend said just drive it till it breaks and tow it home,,,I put a new top on my miata, he said if you can do that you can put a timing belt on...Rog
