Default Tranny? AW50-42 or AW50-40? Tech?

So the Volvo shop manual that was posted on MVS shows the 850 having the AW50-42LE tranny BUT some of these tranny overhaul places selling kits list it as the AW50-40.

Anyone know why the difference? What tranny is it? Tech?

Yours should be the AW50-42 but from looking at my book there is like 5 different ones. The differences are the gear ratio's.
There is a plate on the top of the tranny close to the PNP switch that tells you the part #'s and everything if you can still read it.

Yeah I tried to find it, is it under the battery? Should I have to move anything?

If the gear ratios are the only difference I suppose any 50-40 or 50-42LE would fit? Or am I in la-la land thinking I could put a Saab 50-42LE tranny in my Volvo? Also I found the Daewood Leganza uses the 50-42LE, lots on ebay for <$400 w/ 30k-50k miles on them. Also the Suziki Aerio 04-07 has them. I wonder if a tranny shop would know if they would fit.

They might work but I am not sure. I wish I did know though.
The bolt pattern might be different its really hard to say without seeing both side by side.

I believe you should be able to see it without moving anything.

Tech do you have any recommendations for a tranny shop that might know? I'm trying to find an AW transmission shop specialist but Google isn't much help.

Is yours still dropping into neutral or something when decelerating?

Yes drops into neutral after I come to a complete stop. Shifts 100% perfect every other time alot of times you would not even know it shifted up a gear if you didn't watch the tach it is so smooth.

You're going to laugh. After my MAF incident I was also getting a little bit of bubbles on the dipstick so I decided to drain/refill the tranny. This time with name brand Castrol fluid compatible with IIE and Dex III. Figured I'd be safe. If you recall my car was doing the exact same thing but I drained/refilled 3x with Wal-Mart Supertech Dex III and it hadn't done it sense, even after a 400 mile drive.

Well anyway used the Castrol and BAM did it my first time out. ####!!!!! I've now done another drain/refill with Wal-Mart supertech but it's still doing it. I'm a dumbass. Actually beyond that I'm really frustrated and disappointed.

I just can't win with this car!! On a side note I put premium gas in it and crammed the airbox vent full cold and she moves pretty good for a 3000# station wagon!!

To add when you press the gas does it rev, then "catch" and pop into gear after stopping with a bit of a jerk? I find it odd we are having the exact same problem.

Yep they move good.

I have drained and refilled mine 3 times as well. I may try again soon.

Tech on our trannys, when you remove them, what connections are there? Is it a big plug type connector that plugs the needed sensors into the tranny or something simple? I ask because I had heard you can actually put a later model tranny from say a 99 70 series on our 850's if you splice in the ABS wheel speed sensor.

Air bubbles in the transmission fluid usually indicated an overfilled system.

LE stands for "Lockup Electronic".

See attached FYR.

I too wish I could help you better.

On our cars we have one more sensor that is needed in the back of the tranny. We are kind of screwed for going for a newer one unless you want a wiring nightmare.
