Default Trouble Code P0705 and P0500 on 95 850 turbo

These are the only two codes I am getting. The car sputters upon initial start. Not sure if there us any connection with the sputtering and the codes. Can't find info on P0705

Hi Radfordalum, the P0705 and P0500 are referring to the transmission/speed sensor. The two common problems here are the PNP switch or the ABS module (the speed sensor is read by the ABS computer and those are prone to cracks in the solder joints - you can get the ABS module rebuilt or try replacing from a part from a recycle yard - this is the part that bolts onto the ABS pump, so you don't need to open the brake system to replace. For the PNP switch, try doing the shifter row (P to Lo to P 20x fast) to see if you can get the code to stay away for a bit.

As to the sputtering, not related to the codes. I'd do a tune up (wires/plugs/rotor/cap) if you haven't done one in a while or look for vacuum leaks or check the MAF/idle air valve and possibly clean them with some MAF cleaner. Also, have you seen any changes in the temp gauge? ie does it read some temp when cold (lol, I know its never cold where you live!) - thinking it may be the ECT sensor may be due a replacement so you may want to measure its resistance when cold.

Have you used the little phone switchboard under the hood? That might give us another shot at identifying P0705. I don't see it in the manual.

The generic descriptions of P0500 and P0705 are both transmission related, so I suppose the sputtering is caused by something else.

Thanks for the responses. I changed my PNP switch about a month ago and swapped my one yr old speed sensor on the transmission with the old one and the yellow arrow had stopped flashing as well as the speedometer stopped fluctuating

wondering if you need to tweak the alignment of the PNP switch? You should be able to Google to find some threads on aligning the PNP switch w/o the Volvo factory tool
