Default volvo 850R turbo upgrade

I have a 96 volvo 850R and was wondering if upgradeing the turbo to a 16T is worth it? I was looking to push about 300hp. also will I need to reflash my ECU after I swap the turbo?

Thank you

You can port and clip the 16t. It will wake it up more.

The 850R does have a 15G.
IMHO, upgrading to an 16T is not worth the gains for the price. Go for an 18T and iPd or RiCA Stage III tune with the rest of the supporting hardware.

waste of time and money IMO to go from a 15G to a 16T, essentially the same turbo. As stated above, if you're going to upgrade the turbo, go to at least an 18T. But then yes, you'll need supporting hardware: injectors, exhaust, tune, FMIC would be smart, boost gauge, wide band, MBC or EBC is recommended, etc.

Exhaust and ECU will wake that baby up.

I upgraded to a 16T from the 15G. I definitely think there are gains to be had with that, but I did it because my 15G was shot. If i were looking for a huge upgrade then I would go to an 18T. You can run stock tune and stock everything with the 16T if you go that route though. Under full throttle I never lean out much past 15.2:1

Yep, but I'm still all stock on my tune.

Still, that's SO lean! You want to be at like high high 11s low 12s. Damn, I would not be running that boost if that's how lean I was.

Sorry, im at around 15.2 at idle. when im full throttle I drop down to around 13:1ish. Still too lean? is it possible that the turbo upgrade is too much for the stock injectors? Should I switch to the whites?

OK, that makes sense then. When I'm at idle I bounce between 14.7-15.5, which is where you want to be. 13 is good, on the leaner side of good, but better than 15. LOL. With the 16T and 14 psi or whatever you are running, you should be fine. Try closing up your plug gap a little bit. I'm assuming you're at .028, if you go to .026, you may richen up that WOT. The stock injectors are fine. Did you say you're running a tune, I take back what I said before, Hussein (has by far one of the craziest builds on VS) shoots for mid 12s. I'm rich as **** and dip down into 10s when I'm WOT, but I hear stage III tunes are notorious for that, and there really isn't much I can do.

no tune as of yet. I have a custom intake (mandrel bent aluminum) with K&N filter, OEM plug wires, Volvo plugs, N/A cams, OBX exhaust, 16T, MSD ignition, and silicone hoses. I plan on doing the tune before the end of the summer though, and when I do I will ahve a FMIC and white injectors. Sound like I'm on the right track?

Very much on the right track. What tune do you plan on going with?

Probably the RICA tune from Viva Performance. I'm gonna have to evaluate all my options when the time comes though.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Have you looked at Lucky's (former IPD employee) new company? ARDideas.com

Gilber: thanks for sharing that link: Those tunes look like they're more reasonably priced than the RICA or IPD tunes, but they also seem to get you less power. Definitely worth consideration though - THANKS!

Not sure how you come to that conclusion. With the Stage Blue tune (Which is the tune you'd be needing with an 18T) gaining you 65WHP. That's right up there with the other tuners.
