What kind of metal Volvo downpipes are?

Im having T5 and "R" downpipes. Are they cast iron? Looks like??


Can these be welded??

 

pretty sure they are cast iron. If there's any doubt, take it to a local machine shop - they'll be able to tell you at a glance.

 

When I think down pipe I think of the pipe that is after the exhaust manifold. The exhaust manifolds on turbo engines is cast, N/A's are steel. The downpipes on both are steel. I have welded to both the manifolds and downpipes.

 

What he said. Only addition would be if the downpipe is aftermarket and shiny or chromed looking. Then it's likely an aftermarket stainless steel part.
