Default Volvo 850 Won't Start/Rough Start / Idle in Cold

Hi everyone! I got a 1994 volvo 850 NA. I dont have insurance anymore so i can only drive it once a week around. One day my car started stalling and stoped at a stop sign. Had to let it parked for one day then it worked again. Same thing happened few more times. Now my car has a strong crank and wants to start but its not working. I changed my idling sensor and my cam sensor … didn't work. I got strong fuel pressure… i then checked my spark plugs and they were full of oil and the gap was at 0.55 instead of 0.28… so i changed my sparks plugs with other used ones with the right gap… then it started right away but kept dying right away , so i disconnected the maf sensor to see if that was the problem and to my surprise it stayed in idle but rough, then i plugged the sensor back and it worked… now the problem came back … i cant started it even by disconnecting the MAF sensor and if it does start i can rev it without a problem on park but when i put the car on drive or reverse the engine stalls and dies… the only way to drive it without problem is too press the gas supper slowly or else it dies…I took a risk and drive it to the gas station to add gas … but it wouldn't start again so i had to push the car… i used to have an engine code for bad oxygen sensor but not anymore . I kept cranking the engine alot out of frustration and had some few “pop” … I also had smoke coming out of my intake. I then looked at my engine oil cap and saw this … its my second time seeing this colour after cranking it for too long… I know the car will start again but I’ll have to wait around 45 min .

The car was running just fine and never had a problem until I stopped driving it thats when problem started to happen and add up.

Thank you .

that coolant in the oil milkshake suggests you have a head gasket leak or a warped head. Did the car have an overheating event? what does the coolant look like?

Please don't drive your car without insurance! That's not the normal responsible thing to do, you are just making insurance more expensive for everyone else.

(the goo on your cap comes from driving only short trips and not letting the engine get to operating temp, which will evaporate the moisture that normally forms as the engine cools back down.)

(and hopefully your car will not start again until you get INSURANCE!)

yes! I thought of that also! I never had an overheating situation. Also I saw the same milky shake once long time ago but not too much, and my mechanic said it wasn't coolant. I flushed and refilled the coolant system a year ago, I had a broken thermostat housing seal and it kept leaking from there but i fixed it, I also changed the pcv system. It was super clogged. I made sure to clean all the oil return ports and tested it with pressurized air to hear a clean flow and oil bubbling… But I still failed the glove test !!!!! , I had fumes coming from tip stick and stuff. but I never had a problem driving it around.

Now the car exhaust is cut in half right after the Cat… but i had that before but never had a problem. I am thinking the cold has an effect to it . But not sure . Maybe the throttle sensor ???

I am not driving the car without insurance, i just said it to not explain the whole story because I didint want people to get confused since we are from different areas with different rules . I had a parking ticket for nothing and i contested it. The car was on my girl friends name, we were planing on transferring it to me. But we cant transfer until the parking ticket problem is settled. And we need to pay the annual fee for the plate but she refuses to pay the plate since we are transferring it anyway. We still got insurance but we have to pay the plate. I also explained the situation to my nearest police station and they let me drive the car around only 2 block radius so my car doesn’t die only at night. Thats it!
