what performance upgrades
#3
Yes, my family owns/operates the "Volvo Shop" in ravenna, oh. We do repair and service on all models of volvo s but never got into the performance end of it. I am looking for upgrades to efficiantly use the 850 to its full extent. I'm interested in turbo upgrades,injectors...etc. I just don't know where to start.

Most chips you upgrade in stages compared to what you have. Stage one would be like air intake, exhaust, and then they upgrade your chip to those specifications. To bump it up a stage you would get a bigger turbo where your able to run more boost, then your computer would be upgraded to allow for more boost. Or if you don't do that, get a MBC and boost gauge and turn up the boost that way as well. Ebay always has turbos, otherwise just search for them, I don't know who all sells turbos, I've never really searched for them.

get some KONI's or Bilstien HD's to go with the springs.
IPD swaybars will help for the suspension stuff.
find a 18T or 19T turbo. injectors.... Get a Newer "R" exhaust manifold (05-07).
3" turboback will help more than the 2.5" you have.
A true FMIC would be better then the RIP kit.
Then after you upgrade al those, get a newer tune from VMS.
Stock motor ~300hp is the most before the RODs will need to be replaced.

Front Mounted InterCooler. When you do that your getting the straight air to air/air to liquid cooling. I don't know what you all gain from that, but I'm going to guess that it's pretty expensive. If you're really looking for more boost, MBC and a bigger turbo, like TIPSP said, probably go for a 19T.

Ok my question is this... The items you have listed that are on your car, did you have them installed or were they pre-installed when you got the car?
RIP KIT = Reverse Intercooler Piping Kit. This is a waste of money and nets you no gains. It just looked pretty under the hood.
FMIC = Front Mount Intercooler, which is mounted lower in the front of the car near the bottom of the bumper as to obtain more air flow. You can do this for around $250-$500 or more if you want to go higher end.
VMS uses Upsolute chip tuning by the way. Also VMS is the biggest rip off and crap performance site for Volvo's around. I wouldn't purchase anything from them ever. To many bad stories and images I have seen.
STAGE ZERO first.
If you want more boost you have a couple options... One use a MBC (Manual Boost Controller) and or get another ECU upgrade (IPD USA, BSR, RICA).
A 3" mandrel bent downpipe to a 3" mandrel bent catback system with a free flowing straight through design muffler will add decent performance any bigger and it wont fit and you'll loose power.
The stock airbox is basically the best setup. Why? It is entirely enclosed. A short ram intake while enclosed still gets hot air into it which is bad. A CAI is the best route, but none are made for our cars really so a custom one would have to be made.
Honestly with these upgrades you'll have a very nice fast car. If you need more power then I'd look into the FMIC setup, bigger turbo, possibly a injector upgrade, R manifold...
Also I suggest getting rid of the RIP Kit that is already on there and using the stock IC piping.

injector sizing.....well the stock turbo injectors should be rated at what....35-38lbs?
can porbably hand 18-19psi....dont quote me on that.
Might look into something in the 40lbs range for a 19T.
There is smarter people out thee that can help you with sizing.....
Yes, but need to mention a little more on what IC you will be using.
Bar and Plate will flow more air, but Tube and Fin has more surface which would cool better.
then there is the lenght of your IC pipes, and how many bends you have, what radius is the bends making....etc.
It is a slight difference in performace, both are better outside the stock location.

you can swap your turbo cams to NA cams. Some people do that.
Custom grind cams is all you'll find here in US. You can talk to some guys in Sweden see if they can ship out some cams. Very exspensive.
Motor build....Rods is all you need. rule of thumb is 100hp per cylinder with Rods. though if you have it apart, just do the whole thing right.
RSI seems to know what they are doing..... check out them for internals. Forged Cranks.....etc. http://www.r-sportinternational.com/
Port/polishing the head and matching the manis and gaskets would be great. But.... Engine work is exspensive.
Could probably just find some newer "R" injectors they should be able to power a good deal.
If you do end up building a motor, you will have to convert from Motronic to a Programable EFI unit. like MS or Haltech....etc. Unless RICA/PPC tuners can give you a tune for that kind of setup?????

Talk to 034 Motorsports about standalone ECUs. They are experts with Audi 5-cylinders, so Volvo 5-cylinder should be no biggie.
