Default What turbo's can I get from the junk yard...

I have read a lot about people upgrading turbo's and getting turbo's that were on other cars in the jy. I might consider swapping a turbo but I have no idea which ones off of different cars are "bolt on" options and which cars in the jy I should check?

Can someone give me some info on this?

What turbo do you have now? I think the Rs had the the Mitsubishi 16t turbos. Anything bigger than that will take some modification but I don't know how much. Lucky might be able to answer that question.

Without changing the exhaust housing you can stuff any TD04 cartridge in there without any modification. 15G, 16T, 18T or 19T bolt up and go.

Huh? I was thinking that all of the '95's had the same turbo, what ever it is/was.

I have not done any mods to the car and I doubt that anyone else has either. It preforms like my yellow sedan did, other than it seemed to have been in better condition mechaniclly.

I have no knowledge about turbo's and mods when it comes to turbo's, exhaust, cat backs, etc. Because of my life's situation, going to the junk yard and poking around is like going on a field trip or something. While there, I see all kinds of cars. I have read about people pulling turbo's off of other cars and got to thinking, "one day my turbo may wear to the point that it would need a rebuild or replacement, it would be nice to have some sort of back up turbo from the jy if I only knew which one to pull". That's what prompted the thread.

I'll check out that link that GDog posted and see what I learn there.

The V70R came with an 18T or a 16T. All 850 R models had a 15G.

The 850 R HP differences (220 and 240) were governed by boost. The ECU allowed higher boost on the R's. Both use a 15G.

and as an FYI. I have had (using the same exhaust housing) every turbo on the list. I started with a 15G, went to a 16T then to an 18T and currently a 19T. I can provide feedback on any of them.

If it were my Volvo, I wouldn't get a turbocharger at a jy. I would look for a rebuilt unit.

Just my ¢2.

Well, I see new parts in jy all the time. I wouldn't mind getting one and rebuilding it or having it rebuilt.

I get your point JPN. My thoughts on JY part are that most of the cars were running and driving when they crashed. Most parts are good. You can get a good feel for a turbos condition by getting your fingers on the blades. The price is usually too good to pass up and a rebuild as rspi suggested is a good learning experience and piece of mind.

What I would be leery of is an engine from a car that is mint.

I really don't hesitate to pull parts from wrecked cars. Heck, I have pulled parts with the sticker still on them. Some people actually go crazy trying to fix a car with a blown motor before junking it. New starter (that can't be returned), new alternator (which can not be returned), new battery, new plugs, wires, etc.. I've even pulled a few new cv. Just got to look and see what condition it's in.

Heck, I got an S70 once for $500. Had new tires, Volan wheels, full size spare, newish Bilstiens, rebuilt turbo, new water pump, timing parts, and braded steel brake lines. After all the work the owner tried to turn the motor and it was locked up. I actually hurt myself pulling all the parts off of that car. AFter I got done, I sold the car for... you got it, $500.

I see, there is a point in getting turbocharger from a jy. The only time I use jy is when I need cosmetic parts. For example, a dealer wants $90 on a front door moulding whereas at jy you can get one for $10 or so.

I just hated to see someone getting engine parts from a wreck and having to spend extra $ for premature failure. However, a person like rspi can tell the quality of parts he's pulling off of a wreck so I won't worry.
