Default Whistling Noise

1995 850 Turbo recently started making a whistling noise coming from the front area by the powersteering pumb. After the whistling noise started, I have changed engine oil (Mobil I), topped off all fluids (they were not really low, sprayed belt dressing on the belts, etc. The timing belt has been changed on a regular basis and was changed within the past 15,000 miles by the Volvo dealer.

Any suggestions on what could be causing this? The belts are fairly new as well.

Try taking the Serp. belt off and see if it still makes the noise.

Hello Mr. SD,

I wonder if it's coming from one of the pulleys (tensioner, idler, etc...) for the serpentine belt. Check the condition of the belt for glazing. Aftermarket belts seem to make noise in some cases, is the belt of Continental (OEM)?

I wouldn't use belt dressing, as it's a temporary fix and makes mess.

If the serpentine is ok, it might be the idler/tensioner pulley on the timing belt.

I wish you find the cause soon.

The tensioner was changed at the last timing belt change but it could be that. It could also be the belt. I will pull it off this next weekend and check it out. It is irritating! The car runs and drives great JUST WHISTLES!!!!!!!!!!!

Please let us know what you find. I have the same issue, only intermittantly, on my sons 95 turbo. It started after I changed the timing belt, all idlers and tensioners, the serp belt and all idlers and tensioner for that as well. If the weather behaves I am going to dig into it this weekend.

Turned out to be a vacumn line coupling piece (part number 9155862-7). The samepiece had affected the cruise control for the past year. Volvo could not find the problem with the cruise control previously. Now the cruise control works and the whistling noise is gone.

Does anyone know where he got this part from?
How about a diagram of the location of this hose?

We just drove my wifes wagon 2000 miles in 3 days to see my son graduate from Army Basic Training and the first time we drove the car after getting back this exact noise started, and her cruise has not worked in over a year.
Some help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

That part number goes to a vacuum like elbow. You can search it on FCP's site. Those things are all over the motor. The curise control pump is under the battery tray. Not sure which one he had a problem with. There is a sticky about the cruise control vacuum lines.

The whistling noise is still there under hard acceleration and the cruise still does not work.
I checked as many cruise vacuum lines as I could, removed the batter tray, crawled under the dash.
The switch at the brake pedal is good, no visible vacuum leaks.
All hoses inside the engine bay look good from what I can tell.
Any idea's?
