I never heard that comeout of any other turbo cars. I could be the bearing inside the turbo. Its hard to get to where the bearing is to check it. Or like you said tech, if that is the case the valve is on its way out.
My R with 88,000 miles does it.
My turbo with 190,000 miles does it.
Maybe you also have a turbo hose going bad making the noise louder than it normally would be.

I have only had the white turbo for about 6 or 7 months no problems with the fuel pump.
The yellow one only had about 2 months. Both pumps look like they have been there a while.

Mine went out as far as I know. Wont be sure until 2moro tho. Its coming in finally. I believe its the original. The car has 224,000 miles on it. Do you know where I can find a cam locking tool?
Check the intercooler hoses for cracks. If there's a crack or hole, the boost will whistle as it's forced out the small holes/cracks.
Also, at that mileage, I'm betting that the diaphram in your compressor's bypass valve is all but disentegrated. Buy a repair kit here.
