Default window issue

i just went and looked at a '96 850 and the driver's window wouldn't roll down. the car has been unregistered and off the road for 7 or 8 months and the man selling the car told me it worked before. it makes a clicking noise like it wants to go down, but nothing happens.
what are the chances it's the window regulator? is there any way around spending at least $200 getting it fixed.

You could just do it your self.....also check the switches on the center stack.

If its clicking the switches are probably working fine. Do you hear the motor running with that clicking noise? If you do need a regulator I have one.

i got a new/used window regulator in the mail (thanks boxpin) and attempted to replace it today. turns out the motor works fine, but it only works in one direction, up. therefore i believe it is the switch and will likely pull the switch and use some electric cleaner to spray it and hopefully that will work for a while.
however, the problem is that when i did roll the window back up, i had to guide it with my hands to keep it from coming out of the track. do i have to open it back up and replace the rollers?
i also could not get the regulator unit out of the door once all the bolts were removed. is there any trick to that?

You have to be able to move the regulator up and down to work it out of the door.

but the only thing holding it in is the bolts, it should just shake out from there?

But one of the gears on the regulator is bigger than the hole it comes out of. So basically you have to tilt it and then move it and have the gear swing outside the hole and remove it all.

The window is not currently out. I put everything back the way it was so I could continue driving.

after three straight weekends, i finally have a driver's window that operates properly.
after i attempted to replace the regulator, which i thought was the problem, but ended up being fine, i decided it was the switch. i've read that spraying the switch with some contact cleaner can temporarily fix the problem, but i wanted a permanent solution. i replaced it with a used switch off ebay. the one that was in the car had obviously been submurged in soda.
my window was going up crooked as well, which after some searching, i discovered that it was because a vertical track had been broken. here is the link i used:

very relieved to finally have it fixed.

I had a 960 switch that had a contact problem once and I took the thing apart. Once apart I found that there was some contact studs in there that had what looked like carbon build up on them. I took a small metal file and cleaned the contacts off and the switch worked fine. I also purchased a switch from iPd that worked great.
