I just replaced the starter in my wife's C30 T5 with only 37700 miles. The bendix was fine, the armature was fine the solenoid was fine but the ground strap inside the starter melted (no the car does not crank for long durations). The outside of the housing looked like a lightening show where the housing pieces joined together and were trying to ground to each other. I've been a mechanic for 40 years and have seen a lot of junk in my time and this is right up there with the rest of the crap they are building cars with today. This is a Ford/Bosch starter. Ford and Volvo should be ashamed especially when they quoted me $737.00 to replace it (427.00 for the starter and 310.00 labor). It's in a tough spot but I replaced it in about 4 hours (no service manual because Volvo won't sell you one) and used a new aftermarket high quality starter that cost me 180.00. This will be my last Volvo for sure.
