Question 2000 c70 Turbocharger leaking OIL ,

94500 miles. Engine smoking, large amounts of smoke from exhaust, oil dripping from turbocharger, oil pan being sucked dry. Can turbo oil lines be disconnected to prevent further damage? Will this 5cyl run without the turbo? Trying to determine the best way to to handle this. Oil is in exhaust system front to back.(was dripping out the tail pipe). Did some online reading on turbo replacement. Looks like it will come out the top but some repair books say to remove transfer case , axle shafts . Has anyone ever done this and how hard is it. I,ve seen other nut and bolt jobs that looked simple but required extensive removal of other components just to get to the bad part. Thanks chaz069

there's some other posts for S70/V70s and 850s you can search which should have the same procedure. Some suggest getting at the waste gate bolts from above, some suggest from below. The turbo has both oil lines and is water cooled so you need to drain the coolant before trying to remove the turbo. Best not to drive much if you can avoid it as the oil will eventually clog the catalytic converter and you could be out another $500 of parts. Not sure what you mean by run without the turbo... do you mean to plug the oil lines and wait for the turbine to shred bits of metal into your intake or are you thinking of converting the car to a non-turbo ie replace the exhaust manifold, down pipe and plug the water and oil lines? BTW, none of the turbo repair guides I've seen say anything about removing a transfer case and axle shafts. The deal is that the turbo is bolted to the waste gate via a hard to get at bolt, so most people remove the waste gate from the exhaust manifold. Those bolts are hard to get at and often rusted so you need to hit them with PB Blaster a few days prior to working to help loosen, then have a good set of sockets and wrenches (like ratcheting box ends). Drain the coolant first and don't worry about the oil as there's not a lot to bleed out. You can either rebuild the turbo (kits on ebay go for about $50 or shop for a used replacement on car-part.com )

On an AWD car, it's easier to pull the angle gear. But your car is FWD so you don't even have one.

Bummer Chaz. Curious question - what led you to thinking the head gasket is gone?

Excessive white smoke out of the tailpipe. Exhaust smoke out of the vents, car interior. Electric radiator fan inoperative. Not sure where catastrophic failure started but these are the net results. Chaz069
