hi again,
since 2 days i have a strange noise with our 1999 c70 coupe. hope i can describe it in a rather understandable way. it sounds like heavy single raindrops(which i haven't seen here in the desert yet) or bugs hitting the car - but the noise comes from the front to the middle underneath the car, mostly on the passenger side - but sometimes i thought it comes from behind the dashboard too :banghead: . it is there with ac on or off, fan on or off and only while i drive, can't see or hear anything while standing and idling. looked underneath and in the engine area, but can't see anything that might cause it.
does anybody here have an idea what that could be?

oops, sorry for double posting .....

 

You would have to jack the car up and secure it on jackstands then check from under the car.

The link goes from the swaybar to the strut.
Pull on the sway bar on the ends and feel for play. There should be none at all.
If one is loose you will usually hear it click when you pull on it.

have to travel from barstow to vegas tomorrow (2 1/2 hours), see and hear what happens.

When you get time also opne the hood and where the strut comes through the body try turning the 13/16 nut.

If it spins the strut cap/upper spring seat is broke.

If it won't spin and feels rubbery it is good.

 

tech, checked that and it is ok too. it is kind of hard to describe the noise properly - sometimes it sounds like when something is heating up or cooling down and it makes that cracking noise with it. or it sounds like something could be loose and banging to the underside of the car (almost like a whind chime) while driving - but i checked underneath and couldn't see anything.
