Default Car Failure - Parts Question - 18mm or 21mm?

Hello

My car has failed its check and the mech has advised i need two lower wishbone arms and i need rear brake hoses.

The problem im having is no seller can tell me if i require 18mm or 21mm ball joint!

My mech doesnt want the car on ramp yet as hes quite busy so wont strip it yet but i wanna get it done ASAP. so was told if i can get the part (cos i said i would) then he can get it all done. Otherwise he will order the parts (but the cost will be too high due to where they purchase from)

Question

Lower wishbone Arms Front - 21mm or 18mm?
Rear Brake Hoses - can someone show me a sample off ebay or something please?

CAR Volvo C70 2.4i
YEAR 2006
REG GY06YRC
VIN YV1MC38426J000750

think its 18mm but just need confirmation from soneone thats done this on a car like mine.

Thank youu x

Can't you just call your Volvo dealer, give him your VIN and ask if he has them, what's the price and what's the part number? - He will have a catalog with that exact information. Then you can make a choice of where to purchase them.

For some reason, volvo and aftermarket companies call the same ball joint with different sizes. As far as I know, the ball joint that volvo calls "18mm" was used until around 2005/2006 model year vehicles.
You can either call your dealer and ask, just like hoonk said or remove one ball joint and measure it. Aftermarket companies use the top of the cone to measure the size, whereas volvo uses the base of the cone to do so.
Here's a picture where I described the size differences:
BTW, TRW JBJ740 is a volvo "21mm" ball joint.

yep, there seems to be a parts break at chassis #2742 for the 2006 C70s (after which it looks like they went to a single unit with the ball joint being part of the control arm). Given your car is an early C70, I'd suspect the correct part is common to older cars for that platform like a 2005 S40... (I'd bet you have the smaller size...). All the more reason to measure or simply work with a dealer to get the correct part. Not sure where you are located since the C70 2.4i never came to the US as far as I know but rockauto.com shows both the 21 and 18 mms as options.

Hello All!

(If i can find the actual numbers ill post it)

I read somewhere that its upto the VIN number. A VIN number which goes upto a certain number. At the time of reading i realised mines an 18mm and i have since confirmed this. You guys are correct that they changed to 21mm not long after.

I really appreciate your support and help. My issues are now sorted and im on the way to having the car on the mend

Take care
