Engine idling rough and stalling.

Engine idling rough and stalling.
Well I was coming back home last night, came to a stop light, after it turned green i accelerated pretty hard, not red lining, but in the 4-5 thousand range. It's an automatic, but when i got to about 4500 rpms, and it tried to shift, it just didn't do anything, and the rpms dropped. Scared that I had done something to my transmission, i immediately let off, and when i came to the next red light, my engine stalled. I quickly tried to start it back up, which it did, and then the tachometer bounced around between 200-500 rpms, and if i tried to put it in drive it just stalled.
Needless to say I was not at all happy about this. (nor were the people at that light.)
Eventually after about a minute of sitting in the middle of a 3 lane highway with my hazards on, i was able to pull off by pretty much flooring the gas and putting it into drive, so as long as i keep giving it gas it won't stall, but as soon as i let off it stalls again.
Luckily there was a shop right down the road from where i was that has a very experienced Volvo tech, which i made it to. Although I haven't heard back from the guy there yet, I've also heard he isn't the most honest person in the world, so I wanted to see if anyone here had an idea about what might be causing my engine jump around between 200-500 rpms when it's idling.
It's a 2000 C70 convertible, with 143k miles.
I've been thinking it's either the fuel filter, fuel pump, or the timing belt might've jumped a notch. (timing belt last changed at 67k miles, been meaning to change it soon)
Thanks to anyone who has any input
