ETS light came on yesterday. According to Volvo, ECM module must b replaced. Price quoted was 1400$!!!! Seems sky high when the part is only around 200$. I have a regular mechanic who can replace, but cannot reprogram. Any suggestions to by pass the dealership on this....worst part is that there was a recall on this issue....10 yrs or 200,000 miles. I am out on yrs, but my car only has 123,000 miles on it! Help!

 

did they say ECM or ETM? Its not very common for the computer to fail where the electronic throttle mechanism has known issues with contacts. Services like XeModex and Midwest ABS will rebuild units. If it was stated as the ECM, some faults in the ECM are actually contact/connector issues - I'd start by removing the ECM, cleaning the contacts on the box and the connectors with electronics cleaner then reinstall to see if anything changes.
