I did a stupid thing. The story of what I did and why is in the next paragraph if you are interested. the real question and plea for guidance is the paragraph after that (if you want to skip ahead).
Story - I have a 2008 C70 and a metal bottle (a thick Hydroflask) got wedged under the passenger seat and caused the fwd/back adjustment motor to stop working. The other two motors were working. Anyway - figured it was a cut or crushed wire and I managed to get the Hydroflask out from under the seat, but in order to do so, I disconnected the battery and removed two pivot pins near the back so I could tilt the seat up. The good news is that I found the problem was simply a connector had come off the fwd/back adjustment motor and, after reconnecting it, I reconnected the battery and tested all three motors and they all worked! Sounds like I'm a genius, right? But (here is the stupid part) by powering up the seat switch and testing the seat movement before replacing the pivot pins, I caused a misalignment of the holes for the pivot pin to go into (Seat frame to subassembly - See images) and so I can't even come close to getting the pivot pins back in.
Guidance Please: I know (now) that I should not have removed the pivot pins, but rather unbolted the entire sub-assembly to tilt that seat up. I also know (now) that I shouldn't have powered up the seat until those pins were back installed. But...looking forward rather than back, can anyone help me decide what to try next? I tried using the motors to realign the holes but there seems to be some memory feature kicking in that keeps moving the seat on its own to a misaligned position.
Secondary question - Trying not to take it to a dealer, so if you amazing smart folks can't help me fix this issue myself, Would you know what kind of repair shop would be best to go to for estimates? It is a body/collision shop or just a really savvy mechanic's shop, or maybe an interior restoration shop???
Thanks in advance for advice. This forum has saved my bacon way more times than i care to admit
Step 1 - remove battery negative terminal,
Step 2 disconnect the harness connector to the Fwd/Back horizontal adjustment motor. PS - had to tilt the seat enough to get under the seat since this motor is mounted under the middle of the seat.
Step 3 - Get a 12V power source - either from the car battery itself with jumper cables run over to near where the seat is stuck, or perhaps from a battery charger. and get two small wires with alligator clips
Step 4 - on the motor connector you will see two terminals sticking up (see image). Apply 12 power across those terminals to move the seat up or back as desired. (NOTE: The purpose of movign teh seat like this is to take the seat out the right way, buy removing the four bolts on the subassy (along with the seat belt guide and disconnecting the main electrical connector under the seat. (there are other videos and threads on how to do this.
Step 5 - once the seat is completely out, I was (you will) be able to flip it over and easily re-align the pivot pins.
But - really - if you never are dumb enough to remove the pivot pins in the first place, you won't have this problem. Believe me, removing the entire seat is way easier way to get to or troubleshoot the under-seat motor connectors or wiring. Lesson learned!
