Funny smell....
Usually most odd smells in the cabin can be attributed to a leak at the heater core. But they normally don't smell like a "gas leak". Heater core leaks tend to smell more like you have pancakes with maple syrup being plated up and served on your dashboard.
So, the gas smell you noticed smelled like natural gas? But the smell went away once you adjusted the air flow of the HVAC? The only thing I could think of that would smell like natural gas would be a catalytic converter that is getting a work out. Was there anyone driving in front of you that may have gotten hard onto the throttle? Catalytic converters that get hot often have a sulfur (rotten egg) smell, similar to the smell they add to natural gas.
Let us know what you find out, or if the smell recurrs.

Ted
